crutchfield has these on sale and i was wondering about their quality. has anyone had experience with these amps? mtx has a four channel amp 70x4 @ 12.5V for 249.95 at crutchfield. id say that according to the rms watts it pretty similar to the rockford 600.4 amp, but the mtx is 230 bucks cheaper.

I cant tell you how many times Ive had this debate with my friends. I have 2 Road Thunder amps and I am very happy with them. People say that the difference between the Road Thunder series and the Blue Thunder, or other MTX series amps is that the Road Thunders are built with cheaper parts. Im not certain if this is the case, but I have had experience with MTX Thunder, Blue Thunder, and Road Thunder amps and I cant tell a difference between the three except for price.

The Road Thunder amps I have are the 1999 4180x (4 channel 55x4) and the 1999 2100x (2 channel 80 x2). I have been told by a representative of a car audio store that MTX changed their Road Thunder specs at the end of 1999 due to the fact that the Road Thunders were out performing the Blue Thunders.

I can say without a doubt that I am happy with my Road Thunder amps as I have changed my system around a number of times, but these amps have given me no reason to replace them. Although I cant give you a definitive answer as to the quality of the newer Road Thunders, the old ones are fantastic considering the high quality at a low price.

Good Luck

thanks for the reply. do you happen to know why mtx amps have such a high fuse rating? (underrated or less efficient) how would you compare them to rockford amps, if you have had experience with RF amps?

Hmm, dont know about the fuse ratings, maybe due to the fact that they draw a lot of current. They get super hot too after extended play. As far as comparison to RF, I have used both, but never at the same power level so i would be comparing apples and oranges. I would however dare to say, at lower power levels, MTX amps are better than RF.

I have had the Blue thunder and currently have the thunder amps... all i have is love for those amps. Iver tried others and they just cant compete for the money. All of the mtx amps are under rated. You cant go wrong..

I actually prefer MTX amps to RF's, mainly for 2 reasons. I perfer their cosmetics and overall layout. They don't over market their products with flashy acronyms trying to suggest that their products are somehow revolutionary when they aren't....
