i have a punch 250 and a punch 800 running off a 4 guage power wire in my 88 max. My headlights are dimming pretty bad and when i come up to a ligh with all electrical things on the voltage is dropping to about 11.5-12 volts. I know i need to add a cap but should i also try to get a higher output alternator. My battery is new also. I was thinking in a few more months that i might add another punch 800, so should i just plan for the future and get a big alternator now?

I think that getting a better alternator would be a good idea.

Really, I wouldn't worry about a bigger alternator. Bigger alternators only put out more power when you're running 2-3000rpm. when you're sitting at a stoplight, they actually put out LESS current than an OEM alternator.

If I were you, I would simply add a couple large caps, and dump in the biggest battery you can find.

FYI, I ran my car with a 1100W RMS system on the stock alternator for almost 3 years before wrecking the car. the only electrical system mods I've done are installing an Interstate Megatron battery, and a plug for a 50A battery charger/power supply for when I'm at car shows and playing with the engine off.

I would also highly suggest exchanging the 4awg wire to at least 2awg. if you're going to add another large amp, I'd say to go with 1/0 gauge power wire.

check mcmelectronics.com for AMP KING power wire. it's just as good as the $8/foot brands you see in local shops, but it's about 1/4 the price.
either that or if you don't care about looks, buy some welding cable. that stuff is usually about $1.50/foot for 2awg, and $2.50-3.50/ft for 1/0 gauge.

just thought I'd add that.

I agree, I would just add a cap. Im currently running around 1700w rms total with just a Lightning Audio 1 Farad cap ($30 on ebay) and I have no problems with dimming.

Im running 2 guage wire from battery to distribution block, and then 4 guage to the amps.

Good Luck.
