so can bad grounds give you engine whine?

Sorry to start a new thread on this subject, I just figured it would help get it some more attention.

If you've read any of my other threads, you'd know that I've been having such issue with a really bad engine whine that only started once I regrounded my amps. Originally I had two grounds, one running to each side of the trunk that produced no significant engine whine. Last Saturday, I regrounded the amps to one central ground right in front of the trunk and since then I've had a horribly loud engine whine.

So can bad grounds really give you engine whine?

Yes, a poor ground causes engine whine. That is where most people look first and nine times out of ten find it there. The only other time I have had engine noise was from a bad RCA cable. It was pinched where it went through the firewall. We replaced the RCA cable with a brand new one ond the whine was gone. Also, where did you run the Power/RCA's. Are they on the same side of the car or opposite sides. I cannot personally vouche(sp) for this as a cause. however, have heard of 2 instances where the person who installed thier own system attributed thier whine to runnning them together on the same side of the car. Maybe someone else here can verify this.

Good Luck

Nope, RCAs and power lines run up opposite sides.

Do you have any suggestions for good places in the trunk area to ground to?

Thanks.

it's ok to run both the rcas and the power line along one side of the car. if you're getting noise or whine, a bad ground is the likely suspect.

Nice. Tracking those problems down can be a pain in the but t. Where did you end up re-grounding too? Someone else may have that issue in the future and need your help.

I took them from the center of the trunk and put on back on each side. I really scraped the hell out of the paint and only drilled a small hole so that the screw holding down the ring terminal would be in there as tight as possible. I also used a pretty big washer.

Good. Glad it worked out. Check out http://www.bcae1.com There's more info there than you'll know what to do with...it's a great site for car audio electronics education.
