Alright. I'm not like everyone else and think that I know everything. I will easily admit if I am wrong or not. And you all might be right about caps. From what I have learned in schools, caps do work. It wasn't the exact same thing as a stereo system. It was about the components that operate on circuit cards and what they do. So maybe that it doesn't work for stereo sytems, but I do know that they work in computers, circuit cards, and other stuff like that. So if I am wrong, I admit it. By the way, I don't know first hand for sure if it works or not because I do not have my stereo system built all the way. So, my bad.

if i remember correctly from phiysics theres a metal plate pos and neg plate in a cap, and electrons bounce off that for power

Yes, and the wider the plates or further the plates are from another gives it more capacitance; along with different chemicals between the plates.

Hmmm. Very interesting. OH, and I don't know everything... but I do know what I know. And I have 7 years of car stereo work to back it up, 2 years of Industrial Maint. and Electronics, and 4 years as a heavy equipment mechanic. I'm almost done with my associates degree for automive engineering. And I'm going to take my ASE certifications in November.

And yes, they work great in computers, circuit cards, cameras, and other electronics... but they're also half the size of a stereo, and in most cases, use 1/4 of the voltage.

They're great if you have an HO alternator... but they just cause too much strain on OEMs.

a capacitor does work!!!! just not in a car stereo system, unless you can find like a 50 farad cap, then that might work. the reason that the cap does not work in a car stereo is because, the bass notes are too long for the cap to actually be able to hold its charge that long, a cap will oppose the change in voltage by draining off its current, and this happens in fractions of a second, when many times a good bass note can last say at least a second, by that time the capacitor is discharged, and the alternator now has more load on it because it is powering the system and the cap.

Not only does the alternator have to power the system, and recharge the cap. But it's also supplying power for the engine, ECU, and all the other great little funcitions on the car.

Actually a lot of people forget all about that. And what's even funnier, is people see their headlights dimming, and it never dawns on them that their alternator can't handle the load. So they go out and get a cap... makeing the problem even worse.
