well guys, after all this, here's what I ended up getting. Jason gave me a great deal on last year's model. I think this thing may have enough power and preout voltage for most of you

As to the preouts...that Alpine in the post above is 4v....is that STILL not enough?

Believe me, I appreciate good sound, but I really have no intention of spending thousands on car audio. I just want a solid deck.....

This reminds me of threads where people say "which strut tower brace should I get" and I get all over them about how they should forget about the FSTB and go with a stage II lower tie bar (which everyone doesn't need, but I love)...

As far as the Eclipse units....guys, I'm looking for advice, but give it up....I went and saw one in person today and will not get it, regardless of sound. I just need a solid, functional, nice-looking deck , not the incredible Hulk (looks and sound-wise)

What I'm trying to figure out is: Does anyone think ANYTHING besides Eclipse is good? So far, every brand I can think of besides Elcipse has been dogged....even Alpine

Pearl, you dog the Clairon up top because of the 1.8v pre-outs, but then suggest it over the ALpine with 4v pre-outs and more features? What gives?

As to Pioneer, I've had 4 pioneer decks over the years, and all 4 are currently sitting in my basement, broken......so I'm a bit sketchy about going that direction again.

All I've heard so far is "Eclipse is awesome" and "everything else sucks"......
The 4 Volt preouts will not benefit you in anyway without an amp, if its not EVER in your future, then choose what you like. Alpine has been proven time and time again that theyre preouts levels do not actually produced the claimed rating.

You dont want Eclipse, thats fine. I left it out.

I didnt "dog" the Clarion you suggested WE all just told you the drawbacks of it. When I then said Clarion ProAudio or Pioneer Premier above, did I mention a SPECIFIC one? No, just giving Advice as to which other Brands I would choose. The one that posted is not the only thing in Clarions lineup. That is "what gives" in a nutshell.

No one here said " everything else sucks" so where you got that from Im not sure.

You can also try posting at www.Caraudioforums.com and www.Elitecaraudio.com www.sounddomain.com etc...

Don,
sorry, I didn't mean to give the impression that I don't appreciate the help you guys have been......and i guess "dog" was a bit strong of a word to use. I got a little overwhelmed by you guys, since I was basically looking for a good solid deck but I think "good solid deck" is probably not what any of you would buy, you want "the best" so what would be fine for me would be unacceptable to you.

I didn't mean someone said "everything else sucks", I meant that between here and other audio forums I checked out, it kind of seemed that any of the "mainstream" brands were seen with disdain overall, whether justified or not......so it gave the impressions that the "true" audiophiles would "never" buy something like Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, etc. (which may be true, I don't know)

Or at very least, the response to "how is this Alpine deck" was lukewarm, kind of like when my wife says "do you like these curtains" and I (to avoid conflict) say "yes, they are nice" but don't really mean it......

Anyhow, I just want to thank you guys again for letting me know about some things, and will admit it is a little frustrating for me trying to follow the terminology and features of audio gear. I can take a damn engine apart, but car audio is a mystery to me, go figure. Didn't mean to get snappy at you Don, and I do appreciate your advice and thoughts on the issue, I certainly did take them into consideration and tried to strike a good compromise between features you guys considered important and features that I consider important (why I spent more $$ than I wanted to for higher power, (supposedly, as you said) higher pre-out voltage, etc etc)

So again thanks, and please don't think I was trying to be a d1ck....advice like yours is invaluable....hell, I had barely even heard of Eclipse before this thread!!! Now I know that if they ever make a nice-looking deck, it'll be #1 on my list to look at

After taxes and with a 5-year warranty (extra $50 or so) I paid total low/mid-400s, which I consider pretty good considering the list price of $549, plus the peace of mind that Jason (TAPOUT) is local and would be happy to help me out with install, issues, or whatever....they were having a friends and family discount day so he hooked it up as much as he could....

sure, maybe it could be found cheaper, but I much prefer doing business with a reputable company and a guy I know than with a faceless internet site or ebay....but I figure I saved about $150-200, so that's good enough for me....

I dunno about tweeter/sound advice's warranty, but its well worth it at circuit city. blow your speakers and get new ones. plug you deck into the outlet in your wall before your warranty runs out and bring it to em and say you changed your car batt and it stopped working

Dont worry, I didnt take offense at all. I/we are all here just to help and the majority of us would always recommend the best bang for the buck. Hence the reason for referring to Eclipse. Unfortunately the better looking HUs ended last year. Now Eclipse is more targeting younger generations that the lights and cr@p appeal to.

Very good choice on buying locally, regardless of price. I just wish more people were as sensible as you were.

thanks, and you can be sure that I'll be hitting you up for advice if/when the time comes to upgrade the rest of the components/system. The head unit being the user interface, it has alot more to do with personal preference I think. But as far as speakers/amps go, I would most definitely take your (and others') advice with even more weight.....since the speakers/amp only have a single job: to sound good (not to look good or have easy to use buttons or whatever)....

Jason (cutlr7) specifically suggested I ask your advice on the issue, and said you are the "audio God" of sorts

well, since I know one of their veteran sales guys/installers and trust him completely, I would guess that any warranty issues (hopefully none) will be taken care of in a "positive manner" so to say.....
