alternator whine

hey

was wondering if alternator whine could come from a bad ground. My speakers were working fine till one point where wine came out of nowehre after messing with a speaker cable. Is it possible to have a bad ground on the amp ?

bad grounds are the cause of about 80% of alternator whine. run more grounds from your battery to the body, and make sure your amp ground is to BARE metal on the body, and make sure its good and tight..I suggest using some terminal grease (bulb grease) between the ring terminal and the body, and use a 3/8 brass machine screw and nut. Be sure your amp isn't screwed to any body metal without some kind of insulator (like rubber grommets in the amp mounting holes).

i think maybe itws just the ground wire itself ! I have shaven the metal where i mounted the amo. I mounted it to the metal underneath the trunk carpet . My subs ground amp is mounted there too and there is no whine only from the speaker amp. I really dont know can ya think of another ground spot i cna try to test out

you might try running additional ground(s) from the battery to the body..if your battery has both top and side posts, you're in luck..you can use a piece of 4ga or heavier cable and put a side post terminal on it, solder a cable lug on the other end, and screw it down to a place on the body. Be sure to scrape some of the paint away from where you plan on screwing it down, and add some bulb grease to help keep that spot from rusting/corroding. If your battery is top post only, you'll have to try somthing else..I'd have to see the 4th gen neg terminal for a better idea

Just sand down any thin metal that you want to attach the ground to, then use a self-tapping screw to secure it. I secured my ground wires on the side trunk walls on the left and the right of the inside of the trunk right behind the wall carpet. But there are unlimited places that you can use. Make sure that you use electrical tape to wrap around the wire connector after you have crimped it, to reduce any sparks, or arcing.

you have power cables crossing your RCAs? that would be a likely cause of the whine...unless you have shielded rca cables of course.

take a piece of 4ga or heavier wire with a cable lug on one end, and if your battery has top and side posts, a side post terminal on the other. scrape paint away from a spot under the hood. drill a hole in the middle of the bare spot for a large sheetmetal screw, somthing like a #14 hex head stainless, and screw the lug down. Then, attatch the side post terminal to the negative side post of the battery.

If your battery does NOT have side posts...convert your existing negative battery terminal to marine top post terminal (lead terminal with a stud and wing nut for connecting ring terminals or cable lugs) and use a 5/16" cable lug on the end of the cable that I said to use a side post terminal on, and spin the wing nut down tight against your shiny new body ground. See HERE for my grounding. I used a side post terminal on a 2 ga cable to body, and a marine terminal supports all my other ground connections.
