Amp Problems

When I turn the radio on the subs will be powered for about 30 seconds and they'll stop bumping. I looked at the amp and it said over current. Any ideas?

For example, if your amp is stable into a 4ohm bridged/mono load, and your wire it to a spleaker or speakers with a final load lower than 4ohms it will shut down.

Kind of a lame exp. but my head is hurting right now .

You may have to wire only one sub to it. Let us know what kind of amp it is, brand and model, and any of the specs. Also do this for the subs. It will allow us to help you out more.

how are they wired at the amp, whats the impedance of each sub (2, 4, 8 ohms?) and what impedance is the amp stable to?

impedence (resistance) is measured in ohms, most subs are either 2 or 4 ohms, some are 8. the lower the impedence, the more power it will try to pull out of the amp, but if it tries to pull too much power out of the amp, the amp protests by overheating and cutting off.

How do you have your speakers hooked up to the amp. Are they each connected to one channel, or do you have them bridged. If you have them bridged how are they connected to the amp( + to + and - to -)? If you are running the system bridged at 2ohms then here lies your problem.

How can you tell if they're hooked up to one channel or not? mine is hooked up - to -and + to +. Not sure if it's bridged or not this is my first setup. Any help is appreciated.

Your amp has 2 channels (stereo), each channel has one + and one - . The amp can also be run to give all of its power to one channel (bridged). This is usually done by using the Positive (+) of one channel and the Negative (-) of the other channel.

Now, are the speaker wires that go to your speakers connected together at the amplifier end, or do they go to their own channel?

On my amp the speaker wires go to they're own channel. If the system was bridged would that correct the problem? I know it's a sh**ty amp but it shouldn't be this complicated.

i would get a MM and check the voltage at the amp to see if its getting enough power. 2nd, i'd check the gains. also make sure the amp have proper airspace around it so that the heat can dissipate.

Could be. Check your speaker wires to make sure that they are not contacting any metal.

Also check what AscendantMax said.

By the way your speakers are wired the amp should not be getting stressed. So there must be some abnormal issue making it do this. If all else checks out, it may be time to send in that amp for repair, or upgrade .

Do you want to change out your whole setup, subs and amp? Have you been able to figure out what is wrong?

As far as what setup people will recommend depends on your budget. Let us know how much you are willing to spend and we can give you an idea of what is available.
