Input on Kicker Solo Barics

I just bought a '94 Camaro project car (see Other Cars) and these 8" Kickers were in the hatch. I'm wondering if powered by a so-so amp, would these be decent to install in my little sister's car (who turns 16 next month) in a new enclosure? Thanks guys.

Yep. The only problem with 8's is that they tend to blow because the people who own them were too cheap to buy bigger drivers and turn their gains all the way up expecting them to sound like 2 12's.

That said ... PLEASE put them in a new box :lmao:

Haha, you must not be familiar with my setup (3 JL 8W6's - 12+ years old)

Thanks.

How many times have you replaced the surround on them tho?

I had 3x 8W1's and then 3x 8W6's. They both did great and sounded great, but 4 of the 6 subs wound up with the surround separating from the cone.

That said ... I was referring to MOST people owning 8's ... not ALL people.

I really wish Kicker would have kept making the older round SoloBaric drivers. Those will work great. Especially in a hatch. You can go as small as .44cf sealed and they will get down for a pair a 8's. If she doesn't know about volume control and distortion I recommend the smaller box.

I think given the situation, they would be perfect.

I've actually never replaced them. They've held up really well in the 12+ years I've had them because I've taken really good care to follow JL's specs with the way I've powered them.

Don - yeah, I think any 16 year old that is just starting out driving would be happy to get these. They will be going in a '98 2-door Neon.

You know, I didn't even notice that they are different models Looked at them for about 30 seconds when I pulled the grilles off to snap the pic and haven't looked at them since.

I have one sitting in my garage too, along with all the other we have to put away since we moved in .

I should throw it back in for the heck of it to check out how it sounds now. It has been used in a little while. This will have to wait till after were done totally moving in though.

also as a side note, kicker does still make round subwoofers in the 8" version. They actually are called Kicker Comp's though. You are right that the solo baric's are now square, but the comp's are not bad speakers. If you want you can even go with CompVR's which are right below solo baric's in performance, or geared toward's a different sound quality I should say. I actually just got 2 CompVR 10" subs for a buddy and they knock like crazy. So if you are just looking to keep the round design for box flexibilty than look into Kicker's new line up. The new Solo's are ridiculous though if you haven't heard those yet. But all in all your speakers that you found should sound find considering that they are not blown.

From what I remember, the old Solobaric subs were intended for sealed enclosures. Am I mistaken?

x2. They were made for sealed enclosures. The round 12's only need .88 cu ft of space. I would imagine the 8's need a lot less. Those subs sound VERY different from the Solobarics of now. They are very clean and tight sounding. I think you'll be quite surprised.

Those old school solo barics hit way harder than the new square one's. My boy had the old style 2 10" an they knocked, but after they got jacked he got a 12" L7 and it sounds ok.. I dont thin k the sound quality is good at all..
