My sub sounds like it's popping

When quick bass hits on my Atlas 15 it sounds like the cone is bottoming out or popping. I don't really know how to explain it other than that. What setting on my amp would fix that? Or what is going on? I don't think it's anything too serious, just sounds queer when you have the trunk open.

Yes, only at higher volumes. I lowered the gain just about under half and still does it. Can you tell me about the Phase control and what that is supposed to do.

that just helps the sub get in sync with the rest of the speakers inside the car IE all going in and out together.

is it coming from the port or the sub itself?

Okay, that's what I read in the user's manual. No it goes from 0 degrres to 180 degrees. How do I know what to put it at? What do those degrees mean? I'm pretty sure it's comming from the sub itself, the part of it the pushes in and out.

just set it where the bass seems the loudest. if they're not in phrase, the bass won't be as defined as it should be.

doubt that's the thing causing the popping sound. did this just occur or did it 'pop' since day 1?

I noticed it from like a couple days after I installed it. I think it's my headunit settings. Like the LOW and stuff like that. I'll get back at you...

Do you have a sealed or ported box? If it is ported, it could be caused by not having enough port area. It sounds like the problem I had with my H2, my 1st enclosure was not ported properly. Take your sub out of the enclosure and play it free-air, it it still makes the noise then its something to do with the sub.

Mine is ported. I see what your saying. I have to get my lazy butt into the hot, muggy garage and fool around with more settings. If this doesn't work I will try it in free air.

Ok, I put the LOW on the headunit to "0", it was on +2 or higher most of the time. It was distoring the sub I guess. So I will keep it on "0" like Sunny told me a long time ago to do. That should do the trick. I think I need to stop messing with the settings. HAHA

keep the loudness off, keep the "low" setting on 0, and use NO bass boost on the amp, and put the phase on 0. try that and let us know if it still pops.

It's pretty good how I have it now. The loudness is on, I like to keep it on because it just sounds retarded without it. I just got to put my phase at 0.
