I am thinking of getting an infinity 7540A 4 channel amp. Does anyone have any experience with this particular amp. I plan to use it currently to run an ancient DVC Cerwin Vega RW12D (birth date is like 1989 and I cannot find any info on it). And then maybe later on I can use this amp to power my Infinity 6000cs components and rear coaxials and get a real sub and amp to complement. My question is that is this a good amp to get considering my situation? Do you think that this amp might be too much for the sub I am using right now? Maybe you want to recommend a better amp in this price range? I'm thinking of getting it off ebay so its probably going to cost me around $175. Any and all opinions are appreciated.

Is that Cerwin Vega dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm. If its dual 2, that amp will work for what you want, If its dual 4 then I wouldnt recommend it, because you cant run that amp at 2 ohms bridged, so youd have to run the sub off a single channel, and it would only see 139 watts RMS.

Infinity isnt bad, theyre not the greatest but theyre not as bad as Sony. The 7540A isnt made anymore, its now the 7541A, and the only difference is the type of terminals on the side of the amp. Other than that theyre the same amp. If also kinda depends how much your paying for the amp, because I can definitely tell you that if you buying from Crutchfield, you can find a better amp for a very similar price.

 

I'm confused. If the sub is 4 ohm dvc then shouldnt it require 2 channels at 4ohm each so shouldnt the infinity with its 278Wx2RMS bridged at 4ohms work with a 4ohm dvc sub.

So youd want to run two channels per voice coil? I suppose thatd work, although your effectively running it mono then, but it will work. Yes thatd be the way to get the most power out of the amp. Although I wouldnt really recommend it, itll work, just make sure the gains are exactly the same so each voice coil sees the same power.

 

no no what I'm saying is that when you run the amp in bridged mode doesnt it essentially become a 2 channel amp (278W x 2) and each of those 278 would go to one voice coil each.

If its dual 4 ohm shouldnt it work because it CAN be run at 4 ohms bridged?

 

Yes, the amp can be run at 4 ohms bridged x 2, making it a 2 channel amp. At first I wasnt thinking of wiring bridged like that because its rare to run it like that. Are you building the box yourself to have 2 terminals on it?

Heres where Im coming from. I install at Circuit City and deal with prefab boxes all day that have one terminal per sub, so my mind automatically says "a DVC 4 sub is either 2 or 8 ohms."

But, my other question is, why not buy a mono or 2 channel amp thats meant for a sub, instead of a 4 channel.

 

I have one of the old school prefab boxes that came with the sub and yes it has 2 terminals on it so I automatically assumed that all DVC subs must use 2 terminal boxes. I was thinking of buying a 4 channel for versatility so maybe later on I could use it for my components + coaxials ... but I think I found a cheaper alternative that should suit my needs for a sub amp and then later on I can get a better 4 channel amp.

Between the infinity and the kenwood which one would you recommend buying. Keep in mind I have an Alpine v12 to power my components.

EDIT: I'm leaning towards the kenwood now because I read good things about it on the internet.
