amp cutting out, plz help

Ok, when i had my 500a2 2 channel fosgate amp on my 2 tens, it would get extremely hott after about 20-40 minutes and cut off, i would pause the music for about 30 seconds and it would work again for a few more minutes before doing it again, well when i got the JL 12w3v2 it will do this in about 15 minutes, do i have something wired wrong or can this amp just not dish out what it needs to for the w3?? i need to figure this out before i kill the amp

oh and i was told by my local audio shop that this amp would work fine and shouldn't have any problems powering the w3, well the bast**ds obviously lied cause it can't take it

check your gains and the wiring. make sure it's not wired too low for the amp to handle. also, make sure the area near the amp is sufficient for proper heat dissipation.

please post us how many ohms your svc or dvc subs. Obviously either the amp is dying or you wired it wrong are you bridged ? or are you doing one sub into each channel ? Please let me know thanks

dvc 4ohms, i have it bridged parallel, its wired at 2ohms but it says it can handle that, i don't think i have enough room for heat to escape

move it around and see if it helps. my fosgate amp never overheated or went into thermal protection on me (even in the crazy texas heat)

u cant bridge it because the rockford amp does 500 rms @ 4 ohms bridged. Thats your problem. If you had 2 subs You could wire them in series/paralell. Besides that about 500 rms is too much for one jl w3v2 if im not mistaking ? Correct me if im wrong. i hope you didnt blow the voice coils.

2 DVC drivers with Voice Coils in Series / Parallel
Connecting the two voice coils of each driver in series (+ to -) and the drivers themselves in parallel (+ to +, etc.) will result in the following impedances:

2 Dual-4 Ohm Subwoofer: 4 Ohms

You need another sub to bridge the amp succesfully. Instead just plug it into the right or left channel of the amplifier.

hes running it bridged @ 2 ohms. I can tell. And since its pushing out its max power beyond its maximum ohm rating its overheating.

you cant bridge it because you dont have a 4 ohm load. YOU HAVE to plug it into either the right or left speaker terminals.

wait...how the heck are you getting 2 ohm final load on the amp? with two dvc 4 subs, you can either wire it to 8 or 1 ohm.

ohhhh my bad, thought you had two of them. but yeah, like dcman mentioned, not many amps are not stable when bridged at 2 ohms.

i have the positive from one channel, and the negative from the other, then they go to the sub, and parallel it, too difficult to type, but we all know how to do that, did i do something wrong here? its what the box said, 175wattsrmsx2 channel@4ohms, 250wattsrmsx1@2ohms

that's what you did right? other than that i think it's either a heat dissipating issue or the gains are set too high.

ghost ridden HOW IS IT PLUGGED INTO THE AMPLFIER. Which set of terminals is it going into? It should go into Either the Left Or the Right. Not one from each side

Your not taking one negative and one positive and then hooking it to the sub are you because that would indicate bridged mode which u cant do because you dont have the correct ohmload

something ain't right here, you sure that amp is stable down to 2 ohms when bridged? all the rf amps i've owned are only stable down to 4 when bridged.

i told you already though u cant run b ridged YOUR SUBWOOFER IS WIRED FOR 2 OHMS NOT 4 .WHen you bridge the rockford amp it is expecting a 4 ohm load. NOT 2 . Yes the amp is stable at 2 ohms . But not 2 ohms bridged.

then the audio shop shouldnt be in buisness. All you hve to do is instead of taking a positive and negative from one side. Put a positive and negative on either the right or left channel and that should solve your overheating problem.

aight, but that will make it a hella lot quiter won't it?? i guess it would be a bad idea to run one channel to each of the voice coils??

for now, you can just have it powered by one channel and not bridge it. if i were you, i'd invest in a dedicated sub amp.

Alpine makes good stuff as far as sub amps. I have one. Sounds like a good plan.
