Two bulges on side of trunk ... wheel well?

Simple question, but I need to make sure/double check.

The bulges on the side of the 5.5 gen trunk ... that is the wheel well, correct? If I put a drill bit though it, I only need to be concerned with what's visible from the wheel well, correct? I'm assuming there's nothing in between there I cannot see.

yes, those are the wheel wells

pull away the protective layer on the inside of the wheel well (its like a plastic/cardboard piece) and you'll see the underside of that bulge

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. But I have lots of ideas around floating amps.

my thoughts were:
a: for mounting purposes - of whatever, false walls, amp, amp racks, etc
b: ground, anyone? that was my first theory

Actually ... that's a fantastic grounding point. Enables you to put a nut and bolt through the O ring with some loctite after sanding and keep it hidden behind the factory trunk liner. Might be a good thing to put in a FAQ?

Crimp style O rings are typically used for grounding cables ... sorry if I confused you by inferring there was already one.

FYI - Those are typically referred to as grommets.

On the drivers side of the trunk, there is a round rubber grommet. I fed my ground wires through there and attatched them to a bolt under the car. It's hidden and I didn't have to drill. Just an option.

Wait, I don't understand, you attached the bolt through the hole for the grommet, and this hole was big enough for the bolt to hold on? I'm having a hard time visualizing this (never seen the grommet).

Did hooking the ground up to that particular area eliminate any engine whine? I need to try something out to fix my engine whine...

Hope you sealed that up with some paint or rubberized undercoating.

You know, I'm looking into having my trunk shot with bedliner ... should be a killer sound deadener ...

Absolutely. All any sound deadener does is add weight to metal to reduce resonant frequencies. If you wanted, you could strip your entire interior and have them spray the entire inside of the car. Wouldn't be cheap, but your car would ride like a Lexus.

I wish I had my computer back, I have an insane # of pics to show. The wire is just run through the gromet. The bolt is the mounting bolt to the carbon pellet filled square container(something to do with the fuel lines and the vapors, emissions BS). All I did was add a connector to the end of the wires, -0, and rescrew the bolt into the factory location. The ground wire extends abour 6" after the gromet to reach the bolt.

I don't think you have the gromet in your 4th gen. 5th gens do though.

There is other purposes for deadner, it also acts as a barrier to keep unwanted sounds, ie road noise, out and keep the music inside. This is where I think the spray on bed liner would fail due to it's thickness. JMO.

Spray on bedliners can be as thick as you want. When you go to the place you will specify it's for sound deadening and they 1. will have a different way to mix it, or 2. will apply more coats than they would to the bed of a truck. Either way, the difference would definitely be noticable, I can promise you that.

Now ... my only question is about cost effectiveness as everything on the internet points to it being $300 or so to do the bed of a truck ... I wonder how much they would charge to do the trunk of a car.

Holy ****. Just called Line-X in Clearwater to get a quote ... $500. Looks like it's DIY or empty your pockets ...

Oh and ... most, if not all, spray sound deadeners smell at least a little bit ...

If you can stand the smell then go for it. I say buy some deadner and invite some friends over and go at it. I would be willing to shoot down for the day and bang out some deadener if you went that route.

$500 is crazy. Especially if it was going to smell.

$500 is more than crazy ... you'd have to have a labotomy to do that.

Anyway ... I think the spray route is in my forseeable future. There are lots of nice products out there. It will just take time to mask everything off and make sure you don't paint the car itself in the meantime ... YIKES.

I hear you're supposed to use a paintbrush, not a spray action, for the liquid deadener... just a thought.

There is the kind you roll on and then there is also aerosol type spray. This is the most versatile way to do it. When you spray your door panels, it's easier to get a good coat on the outer door skin as well.
