running with no rear fill
I'm not the biggest on audio. However, I really need to upgrade my factory BOSE. It keeps on blowing. I'm on my third set of BOSE speakers and second BOSE HU. I'm not going to go that route again. I already bought a set of used Eclipse components and a JL Audio 4ch. amp. I still need a HU. I don't plan to run any rear fill. First to save some money and second I'm usually by myself in the car. As far as HU, I'm thinking of going with a Pioneer HU. I want an Eclipse HU, but they are a bit too pricey. So how would a Pioneer HU, Eclipse components, and JL Audio sound? Or should I just ahead and get a rear fill too? TIA.

As long as you have a good front stage you don't really need rear fill, but that's all your preference. You could save the money and do without it, however if you are technical and want to have true 5.1 for incar video applications just get a regular set of speakers and throw them back there they don't have to be another component set. I haven't heard the eclipse components but it will be better than stock, all those you chose are good name brands that perform.

IMO use the 2 front channels to run your components and bridge the last two for sub duty(whichever u decide- 8" in the rear deck IB, or a single 10 or 12" in an enclosure for the trunk-shouldn't take up much space. As far as HU if you are on a budget, just find one with the features/conveniences you need/use.
eh...i have coaxials sitting in my garage- just dont bother to put'm back in- i dont miss rear fill much. In real world if you were at a concert you dont have sound/vocals coming from behind you, its much more realistic and more plasurable to focus on the separation up front. Lots of people like the added sound of rear fill tho, decision you have to make.

As far as 5.1 goes, if you are into HT having rear fill is not much fun unless you have a nice center channel anyways-4.1 aint gonna cut it...lol. Due to the encoding of DVD's you'll lose alot of volume, language and stage not having a center channel.
If you are building the car for 5.1 then do it correctly, if true music reproduction is more important, then there is really no need for fill.

I am gonna put these in the rear

Some Diamond D3's in the front
A decent 4channel amp and an Eclipse HU to replace the BOSE. It should cost around 500-600.

When you go to a concert, do you turn around so the music comes from behind you? Of course not. Establish a front stage that presents the music in front of you as it should appear on the soundstage, as if you WERE in concert and the band was coming in front of you, or at least you hear the music as the musicians meant it to be heard. Video is surriound w/ center channel. Audio is stereo, left and right channel in front of you only. #%*@ rear fill. Once you hear music the way it's supposed to be heard, you'll never go back!
Sorry to rant...it's not about needing rear fill or not....I'm obviously not a fan.

Thats the effect of car audio subs , so that you get that knock up front with the rest of your stage. How you phase, and xover that sub into your system will affect how it blends up front.
If you think it'll sound weird, then obviously you dont realize that Sound Quality competition vehicles are designed this way, you actually get points taken away if a judge can hear rear fill, as it pulls the stage back.

I've had rear speakers in my 97 max. In the transition from getting my system installed in my 01 Max I had the Bose system for a while. After getting my Focal components installed up front and time aligning everything it sounds great. I'll never install any speakers in the rear again.
