Personally I will sacrifice a bit of trunk space for an enclosure. There are several inharent issues with free air and IB installations that I don't want to deal with. JMO.

I had two 12" Kicker Freeair subs in one of my cars and I was pretty happy with them at the time. Back then I could not have a box in the trunk, so that was it for me. I had made a tiny enclosure for the subs to mount to right behind the rear seat. I was not using rear speakers and the subs were firing through the rear speaker openings. I made sure that the front of the subs were totally sealed off from the back. If you do not do this they will not sound good at all. Like I said for me at the time they worked great, but now days speakers can be put into pretty small enclosures that will still give you nice bass output.

doesn't the trunk have to be completely air-tight for a free air sub to sound optimally? that would be tough enough... itd be eaiser just to put subs in a box

the stock free air sub in my i30 sounds decent enough...if they had two of them I think I'd be satisfied.

Some prefer the low levels of output from the stock sub. I unfortunately am a basshead. Even 2 wouldn't do it for me. My wallet would be much happier, but I would always be craving more. It's a sick sick habit. I love it.

Yes. It illiminates any cancellation caused by a uncontrolled rear wave from the back of the driver. Some people prefer it. I would only recommend it when space is an issue.

granted, if space is an issue, they are awesome, but I prefer the 'sound' out of an enclosure better myself...

hmmm...I thought I already chimed in but don't see my post.

I like em, love the space saving, and I guess unlike some others in this thread LOVE the sound. Guess it's all preference. It's my personal favorite sub setup. I've played with others but haven't been satisfied, so finally I'm gonna take the plunge and hopefully be happy for a while with my sub setup, giving my more time next summer to play around with my front stage....

I was going to do the same before I flipped out and decided to go w/ 2 12's. One 10 or 12 firing through that space and block off everything else (rear deck and rest of rear seat area). A big baffle accross the back. IMO this would be the simplest IB install unless you're gonna quickly put an 8 or two where there used to be stock rear speaks. I think I remember seeing a thread recently where this was well done (the two 8's IB, which may also be something you may want to look into)?

Look into finding a used IDQ 10 for next to nothing and throwing that in that application IB with 2-300 watts on it, a solid front stage to match, and you'd be lovin in I'm sure
