I buy EVERYTHING (even the shoes I'm wearing) online, mostly because I can't find it locally or it's just cheaper. I mainly buy from ebay. I have 98 positive feedback with a 100% rating. I've never been screwed over. I ALWAYS do alot of research on the sellers. I've almost been screwed over but I'm smarter than that. Even if I got screwed over on a big purchase in the future, it wouldn't matter to me because I've saved SO much money already.

Alot of people don't do enough research on who they're buying from. Some people are just unlucky. I guess I've been a lucky one.

It's definintely better to buy products from a local dealer for many reasons.

BTW madisound and partsexpress are awesome.

I too buy alot of stuff online and ebay and have never been screwed...The key is to research the seller you are going to buy from...Especially from ebay,i don't care if they have sold 30,000 items, if their feedback is under 98%-99%...i pass them up...

So if you go out of business you will still stick by your extended warranties huh? I doubt it.
It's not much of a risk getting stuff online anyway. Paypal will compensate all of those people that got screwed by the zeb if the people were smart enough to use paypal. Even if they didn't use paypal, most credit cards offer protection against this kind of stuff. When you compare what car audio gear costs at dealers compared to ebay and other online companies, I think it is still well worth the risk. I have been screwed at my local dealer before too. I would rather cut out the middle man and save the money.

No if I went out of business the MANUFACTURER would cover the warranty.

Not really looking to take a side here. There's certainly valid opinions on both sides. I will admit that I am one of the people that buy online and haven't gotten royally screwed yet. Yeah I'm prolly due. I actually buy more used from respected forum members and new from parts express than I do new from unauthorized sites, though..much more.

One concern I always have about the warranties as a do it yourselfer is that these companies, if a product is defective, MAY (maybe a company by company policy, or maybe Don can answer this one) be worthless to me since I didn't have it installed by an authorized or MECP certified installer. If they won't honor that warranty, and I do understand why they wouldn't, well...it takes away a major incentive of spending the extra money for authorized. For the non DIY'er though who is going to have stuff installed by a reputable dealer and get the warranty, well I guess thats another story.

You've got a point there. I always am a little worried that I'll have something that's defective and they'll want proof of mecp qualified installation. Luckily, I haven't had that problem. It all depends on what price you are willing to pay for that piece of mind. I'm willing to take that risk most of the time.

Steve, as far as the warranty goes, when making an authorized purchase, you always have a warranty, just wont be as long as when its dealer installed. Rainbow for example is 1 year self installed. 5 years if dealer installed. Its a mix of both worlds at this point. A: The manufacturer of course wants to help the dealer by doing this so they make the money on the install job. B: You should go to some of the training meetings I have to endure.

I understand the point that people are making about online sales, simply put its cheaper. Maybe Im just old fashioned or just plain old at this point, but doesnt anyone want to actually get feedback from the person selling it? How bout personal service? A physical person to go see/talk to if/when theres a problem,etc,etc...

If buying something used, sure do it all day long, hell I have several times myself. Although at that point I know exactly what Im buying. When Im investing several hundreds or thousands of dollars I like to know the person thats taking my money.

good points. i think with technology and the ability to sit here and buy a bunch of stuff cheaper without the usual hassle of ignornant shop owners (speaking only for gville here), its turning to all about a low price point. whats lower=better to alot of people including me before i educated myself.

Yeah the shops around here suck. Aint no way I'm supproting them with my money. Maybe I've had such luck online cause I was taken so badly by local dealers before I became a DIY'er. It was the local, authorized dealers (Don IS NOT the typical local dealer) that pushed me there....

Oh and Don, no disrespect here, but a reason that you don't like online sales may be that you're old fashioned, and also maybe partly cause you're a dealer too?

I dont mind buying stuff online...I buy used knowing the chances one takes, theres also stuff like peripherals, wire and the such that can be bought at good prices. There's also companies out there that dont have a dealer network, and mainly sell their products online...but to buy a new product that knowingly is only meant to be sold authorized and the company is against online sales....i dont care how cheap it is, i wont do it. Thats just me, i'm not a gambler.

Those that say they take their time and research these online sellers before buying from them-it should involve more than looking at seller feedback- a truly educated research, should more importantly involve researching the product and the manufacturers take on online selling. Calling the manufacturer and verifying whether the product is coming from a viable source with the manufacturers protection. Otherwise its truly not an educated buying decision and obviously dont value your money.
All i know is i bought authorized and i have coverage for 3yrs on most of my gear....worry free buying experience-worth every penny.
Alot more security than an e-tailers 30 day waranty that may fold tomorrow...ala the zeb

Yeah I want one of the new eclipse h/u's and I won't get that online. Their warranty makes it worth it to have a dealer install it. They are the exception to the rule though.
I like to find things used every once in a while too. I bought my sub amp off the org here for 90 bucks. I bought my cdt's new but I got them from island sound so they do carry a warranty I guess. My sub is really the only thing that came from ebay and honestly I probably should have gotten a different one. It's durable and loud but not very musical

Too add to the "worth paying for the warranty list", 05' Diamond Audio amps sport a lifetime warranty under the same conditions as the Eclipse. Yeah I paid extra, IDGAF, I will never have to buy another bass amp. Both of these companies earned my business.
