make a boz seem smaller

i just got a new sub and box for my b-day and i was wondering because the box is a little too big, is there a way to make the box seem smaller by putting something in it? i remember hearing something about polyfill but i dont even remember what it does? sorry i know i should search but i'm heading to work i was hoping i could come home and be able to get the answers. thanks guys!

what sub and box size is it? polyfill makes the box seem bigger, not smaller. put pieces of wood in there to cut down on the internal airspace.

so the box is bigger than the recommended airspace for the sub?

ok well i wasn't sure what polyfill did so i was asking. before you guys tell me to just make my own box, i do NOT have the skills. I know it is simple but trust me, i found F it up.

i have a new Alpine Type R in a ported box that is 1.8cuf. the book said it is recomended at .75-1.75 but i checked all around town and EVERYONE is out of single 12" boxes. I finally found a shop and they had one left so i took it. i just hooked it all up and it runs fine but i was just wondering if there is a way.

onto my next post! i was just about to ask, i've heard of a sub break in period, and i REALLY dont want to screw it up, how exactly does a sub break in work? just dont blast it right away? or just gradually get up to as loud as u want? so far i've turned the bass down on my head unit a few notches and just kinda tested it out at low volumes to make sure it works.

well as long as your subsonic filter is set (asuming that box is ported), gains set (bass boost better be off), box is sealed, **** on that sucker.

just keep it at moderate volumes for a few days then blast it. i never broken in my subs...but that's for another thread.

maybe you can place a bag of sand or something inside the box to decrease the volume?

sub sonic filter? i have a phase contol and i believe i have set the filter. as long as thats the one that controls the freq. but i have my gain turned all the way down and my bass boost up a little bit. is it better the have the bass boost all the way down and the gain up a little?

to my understanding...and correct me if im wrong slickrick, but polyfill doesnt make the box seem larger, it simply redces the velocity of any air flow...i.e. eliminating and air noise in the box. polyfill however is not a relevant issue in a ported box...but merovi...your best bet is to buy a new box since you dont have the skills to build or modify one. with it being a ported box, i dont think that you will notice the 0.05 cuf difference.

it slows down the waves in the box "tricking" the sub into thinking its in a slightly larger box. its main purpose is to compensate for a slightly smaller than spec box and all it does really is make the low end slightly more pronounced. standing waves can be an issue but with the typical use of a car subwoofer it is not a concern. the ported box should be fine, people get their panties in a wad about ported boxes because they do not tune the box right. box size is important, but .005 when compared to a shoddy manufacturer recommendation is just fine. half the time the mainstream brands make the box sizes smaller to reduce the chance of mechanically blown subs, and to boost the upper bass frequencies which makes the sub appear "louder". on a side note, ported boxes do not benefit nearly as much from polyfill and is not usually recommended. i have heard it can slightly lower the tune of a box but i have not tested that out.

umn I'd say take off all the BB and adjust the h/u accordingly. the subsonic filter just reduces the risk of the sub blowing mechanically by not permitting it to play low frequencies at high volumes when playing notes below the tuning.
