The midbasses: Peerless XLS 8's (Actually HDS 8's but they're being called XLS's). Here they are next to my old Seas CA 18 RNX's. The RNX's are a beefy 6.5 midbass driver, so you can see how large these babys are compared to them

Had to trim just a lil metal to get the baskets to fit in there. These are actually 9's if you wanna get technical. Friggen Monsters Baffle out of 2 3/4" pieces of MDF glued together.

Wow, Those 8's must pound the heck out of your doors. Since the 8 is more like a midbass than midrange, what else are you running up front?

Well before for a little while I played with Dayton Reference 5's and ribbons in kicks, but I'm moving to horns under the dash and efficient midranges in the kicks. The midranges are supposed to be kinda big, but I get them this week so we'll see how that goes. It should be a very "dynamic" front stage if it every gets done....

The doors are VERY well deadened. Any problems I'm having is with the door panel, and once everything else is all complete, theres a few things I can do to take care of that.

I don't know the rest of your system. What's going in kicks? If you're playing the 8 exclusively as midbass, I'd def. say the peerless of the two, or maybe consider one of the many other 8" midbass options. If you're running it as a midbass/midrange in a two way, well, the Peerless isn't gong to give you the best midrange. I was real impressed with the Seas as far as a combo of midbass and articulate midrange at a great price. Really good midbass for a 6.5, but could never compare to the amount of air an 8 like this can move. Really depends on the rest of your system. I'll prolly pikc up the old IDQ 8 DVC 4 ohm if I come up with one so I can run at 2 ohms, get the most out of my amps, and attempt to brand match a little more.

nah, using a set of polk momos currently. those will migrate to the kicks in the next couple of weeks. Im finishing the other kick panel currently. I thought about going with the kicker rmb8 as i was really happy with the rmb6s in my other car. seems their discontinued so im searching.
my doors are pretty much as deadened and sealed as they are gonna get , and im happy with the response from the 6.5s in there now, but need a little more kick.

Then I'd say go for 8's. Many to chose from. I got these cause they were cheap and have gotten great reviews. They're sold on www.diymobileaudio.com . DLS, Morel, Dyn, Illusion, JL IB4 if you can find them, OZ (if you can find them), and don't rule out the Dayton Reference 8 of course as a cost effective option among others I'm prolly forgetting, including offerings from the raw driver companies vifa/scan/peerless. For instance, Seas just came out with a CA22RNX. I guess a bigger more manly version of the CA18 that I loved. That would have to do a great job too...http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/ind....3478&pid=1944

Like I said, I was real impressed with the seas as far as midbass output for a 6...also with the DLS Iridium with a lot of power.....

Good luck!

I don't have 8s yet...but I am strongly considering running the Adire Audio Extremis in the doors. Not sure yet. I listened to Manny and Don's system yesterday, and it has shattered my SQ standards beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I'm probably going to be changing the WHOLE system...lol.

hahah I was waiting for that response from you after hearing some nice SQ systems. You've got the glass skills and the patience to make a great SQ systems. Now you've had the exposure to them!

So, are you looking at a 3 way front stage now?

Come Springtime I shoud be ready and willing to come up there for a mini meet, given that it's you, chu, don (who I've yet to meet personallY) manny and not a gangsta SPL meet. I'd love to hear the dyn system and whatever Manny and you have going on by then and WILL have my more final version of my system done, tuned, and cleaned up. If we have one down here my way, we could get a World Champ car here to compare to. It always leaves me nice and depressed and grounded when I start thinking my stuff sounds good.

Yeah, I hear ya man. I am completley changing my system around now. I will indeed be going active 3-way. Don has been so gracious as to allow me use some of his tools, and exposed me to some materials that will allow me to be more creative with everything...we're talking some very intense project coming up. After hearing their systems, ugh, I feel so small time. I would be down for a springtime SQ meet, count me in.

Im always down for a meet, by then I should have a HU finally. Unfortunately when Dan came by I still had/have my stock HU running everything. WHich in turn really breaks my heart running a Dyn setup.

Emilios over at Dyn is going to give me some other points to try with the crossover setting, but wants me to have about 60-80hrs on em....

Chu is on his way up now, so maybe well just play a bit.

Have fun. Man I wish I was closer. We'd have lotsa fun Can't wait to hear the dyn setup. I'm already a fan as you know....

It's a nice day for installing too. By the way, does your garage have heat? If so, it may be worth me taking a trip up there in the winter if we could work something out like Chu is with you. Freezing temps does not equal me working slowly and patiently.

Im using an Arc DXE, Steve is using a P9? or 9255? I cant keep track anymore which one, and Manny is using well....a whole bunch of things. Lets call him Hybrid.

In other words...no passives here, everything is active.

I'll b running 8's soon. Steve did you get the pad that's behind the speaker from partsexpress? I can't remember what they're called...

Manny, how do you like those Morels? I'm still trying to get some more opinions on what midbass to use, since I haven't personally heard a lot of the ones I'm looking at.

It's called a deflex pad. I got it from...ummm I forget right now. Parts express apparently has them in a pretty red color....

http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage....ctGroup_ID=368

Was using a Clarion 9255. In the process of switching to the Alpine H701 combo setup for processing.

PS...new word on the street is that the Dayton References will be avaliable in 4 ohm versions as of January. Including the 8. Hard to be the quality of these at the price....

I love'm , especially for dedicated midbass on 3way fronstage. Under 2way they were good, but not super impressive in the upper midrange. There's only so much you can expect out of a large driver to cover, thats why 3way is the shiznit. But if i were to do it again, knowing i was going 3way, i would've went with another version of the driver that comes in 4ohm-like the much cheaper mw266 or mw265.

I've heard good things about the deflex pads and I'm thinking about getting them. What's your opinion on these? Do they really help?

I'll be honest and say I haven't done an A/B test to have any educated opinion. At the least, I'd dampen the heck out of the area behind the speakers and use some sort of foam/ensolite at the least. I just decided that while I was treating my doors, I wanted to do everything possible to ensure the job was done right, so I put em there just incase there'd be an improvement.

I've heard plenty of systems without them that sound phenomonal.

I've heard that some ppl perfer egg crate over the deflex pad...u have any experience with the egg crate?

Manny...I think I'm going to try running dual 8ohm drivers n each door, now that I've said that I know u guys r gonna hold me to that . Money permitting that's what I'm planning on doing, but may have to only run 1 8" per door for now, cause I really wanna get my horns installed ASAP. I'll have pics of them on the 29th guys...

Hey skierxx, hope these pics help. These Dynaudio MW170 8-inchers barely fit in my 2001, but they fit:

Here's a pic of the MDF baffle. The one on the left has a cover over it to simulate the extra thickness of the cone's travel at maximum excursion (I put the baffle in the door and then put the door panel on to make sure everything would fit beforehand):

And here's a pic of the inside of the door panel. I had to cut everything away with the red arrows pointing to them in order get them to fit:
