Amp going into protection mode

Over the summer I was sold some kenwood subs in a box with an amp. They had been removed from my friends car after his car got totalled. I got them for nearly nothing so the money was no big deal. The fuses had been blown on the amp but we weren't sure the actual state of it.

When I got around to testing them out, the amp wouldn't stay on. With the settings all turned down, the amp would power on for about 2 seconds then the fuses would blow. I figured the amp was just fried and never did anything about it until today.

Since I had gone through about 10 fuses, i tried some of the spare 30's I had (originally had 20's in) To my surprise the fuses did not blow nor did the amp turn off. The problem is, that it is now in protection mode. I've tried powering it up with the subs unnatatched and checked the groundwire. Is this entirely due to the fact that there is a larger fuse letting more power in or is there something else wrong?

yeah, don't use bigger fuse than it requires, or else you'll risk damaging the internals. the amp came with a 20 amp fuse for a reason.
