HU Replacement and Bose Woes
Later tonight can work, anytime cuz I'll be out and about so give me a call you know the #, or pm me for it. I do understand man. I just should have picked up the other day when I came over. Don't mean to be a pest. But now that the soundstream is sold I need something to replace it you know?
Alright so I just read all 7 pages of this thread and it sounds like a few of you are in a similar situation as myself. So i got new sony 52x4W headunit for my max which is BOSE. It came with the PAC (the adaptor with the gain controls) and an antenna adapator. I installed it crimped/wirenutted all the wires etc, the only problem is the sound is horribly distorted. The bass is gone and overall the sound is really tinny (if thats even a word).
Also the volume is barely audible from volume settings 0-20 (out of 34) and gets more distorted as it increases to a decent level (25-30) and goes into the range of unlistenable because of major distortion at 30-34 the upper range of the volume controls.
Have any of you had this problem when replacing the bose HU but leaving the bose speakers and amps? I tried adjusting the gain controls on the PAC adaptor but it didnt seem to help the distortion problem much only increase the volume so i left it at the lowest setting.
AHH help Im losing patience with this stupid bose system. what can be done?!?!

replace the 4 speakers? I thought there were 6...
I dont remember what page it was on but someone said something something, with the new headunit it will sound better than with the bose... was that just utter bullsheet?

Instead of spending more money, it would probably be better to figure out why the problem is occurring.

and im not an audiophile or a bass junky, I dont really want to drop 500 bucks on new speakers and all that, I just want it to be listenable, maybe 80% of the sound quality I had with the original BOSE would be a goal?

This is true. Any suggestions on what to check with his wiring. I suggested replacing it all bc its the easiest, although more expensive way to get it done if someone has less experience working the bose into the aftermarket headunit.
1. Sure everything is wired correctly? Wire with black stripe is negative.
2. Turn EVERYTHING down. Including all the gains, all the EQ of the HU
3. Turn one thing at a time back up.
Does anyone have suggestions of how high the gains of the PAC should be? I've never used one
Sounds almost like something is turned way up, causing distortion.
Process of elimination here....

The pac from what I understand uses high level inputs, so its already working with a exponentially greater input than low level rca inputs. Maybe the head unit has a source level adjustment or an attenuator built in... that could help.
What kind of distortion are you getting? Is it from too much bass? Or is it an overall distortion?

does anyone know the "correct way" to adjust the gain controls on the pac? should the volume on the headunit be low, high, in the middle?? Im assuming eq all set to 0... any other suggestions?
Im already planning on checkin the wiring in the morning and doin some diagnostic stuff wen its light out..

the distortion is overall, but what i really dont understand is why the bass levels seem to be much lower in relation to the mids/highs than before... even with the eq adjusted for maximum bass and minimum highs it only seems to decrease the oveall volume and there is no noticable difference in bass level.
ive been tryin it with lynch and project pat and that little 6x9 bump is definately gone.. :-/

Sounds like a wiring issue. If any of the speaker leads are out of phase this can happen. Ive never used a PAC unit and I never will. Never had a complaint from a customer, especially when theyre saving $50+.

Check wiring first. Then set all "processing" to zero. Then the PAC to almost zero. Try it then and adjust accordingly.

so the speaker leads could get out of phase by connecting like a + to a - or a green with white stripe to a green or something like that? Is that what you mean by wiring issue, or something more like an incomplete contact or bad wire??
im a little confused on what i should be looking for when i get in there in the morning..
