BIG SPEAKERS IN SMALL KICKS...not pretty, but I got pics!

Hey folks:

Went up to Don's the last two days. Big props to Don and DJfreestyle. DJ did a great, meticulous job on wiring and Don helped a bit with everything (sanding horns, wiring, help planning kicks and cutting metal and wood in hopes that these may go in) . Didn't get quite as much done as I wanted to, so came home today and finished making the kicks, carpeted real quick and got em mounted. PITA

Still needs some cleaning up, but they're in.

There are some morals to the story here:
1. Standard 6.5" midbass drivers would be easy to get in 4th gen kicks, and prolly less work than dampening a door.
2. 7.5" speakers with huge magnets like these ARE NOT meant to go in kicks wihtout building them out. Lotsa cutting and hammering of metal was involved.

First off the speakers....Audax PR 170 MO's. Not in production anymore, 100 db per watt efficiency, essentially PHL 1120 clones....got my hands on these classics and couldn't pass up trying to put them in kicks (though 6.5's would have been SO MUCH easier) Don measured these at around 7.5 I think, and as you can see, the magnets are no wimpy lil neo magnets.

The cutting....words cant describe how much cutting and hammering had to be done to get that last inch of clearance for these magnets. What the heck was I thinking? BTW...none of this is structural "double metal".

And the speakers shoved in there....Again not the prettiest, not countersunk, could use some duraglass to perfectly mesh with the curve of the kick, but by the time this was said and done...I needed these faukers IN THERE now (or should I say, yesterday). As far as sticking out, thats the cool thing...7.5's in kicks that stick out no more than a stock kickpanel Priceless!

cool idea lol. I just cant get into cutting the metal...cant do it, but good job. How many hours into getting that damn thing in there? Looks as bad as the usd mids, maybe worse for those monsters.

NE Way good job YO!

beefy looking speakers...and that's a pretty darn high efficiency rating!

Looks great Steve. Sorry I couldn't stay for the final product. I'm sure it sounds kicka$$.

Your dash is finally something to be proud of, cause I never would have expected to see such a mess back there. Glad I could clean that up.

Don thanks for taking over in the trunk when I left, even though you did all of it anyway.

Attention to don...thx for wiring the amps , letting me use the garage and tools..everything. Awesome work. You know, when I have time, I think I can just move down where you attached the largest amp accross the others and fit it on my back wall as planned.

Yeah I could have definatley used some beer or something stronger.

Should be well worth the effort. They'll look real good once I build and vinyl covers for em, but I'll wait till Spring Break for that one.

No sound yet Nilesch. One horn is mounted, should get the other up and running tomorrow hopefully, plug in unplugged door speaker, pick up a new fuse holder, and give her a tunin (uhhh, actually instead of me taking 10 hours of tuning, I think I may have an appointment tomorrow night with a much better tuner than I, and make fine adjustments from there). Next weekend...pretty up and combat door resonances.

Same here. Knowing me I'd get halfway done then stop for a few months and finish later.
