Does a sub need an amp?

I have a 3rd gen max with the bose speakers. I have a pioneer mp3/cd player. I love the Bose because they're super clean and crisp. I can get them pretty loud, too, but am afraid of blowing them out.

I was thinking of maybe putting a sub in the trunk so that I could really turn it up and have tons of base along with crisp sound from the Bose. My pioneer isn't short at all of power, it seems, so could I just incorporate a sub along with the other speakers? Or do I need an amp and maybe an equalizer or something?

I'm new with the whole audio thing, so i don't know much. Thanks for your help guys.

In short...YES! give us a budget for the subwoofer amp, and tell us what sub you want to use.

Haha bose super clean and crisp... anyways....YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN AMP to get that "really turn it up and have tons of BASS" type of setup.

We can tell that you don't know much, but don't let that discourage you from trying to upgrade.

Thanks guys, I was really looking for something pretty cheap (on a college budget you know). I was going to get something used probably under $50 or so, maybe a little higher. Any ideas?

not trying to be a smartass, but i cant think of any thing sub plus amp plus wires and etc for even 100 dollars. my advice would be just uprade the stock 6x9's or graduate college and buy anything you want. Good luck in school.

Hey to the local guy. If you keep your eyes open you can probably find a used sub to add a little bump. Plan about $25 for a cheap wiring kit for the amp and at least $50 for a used sub and box. With 60,000 college students around, it's not too tough to find stuff super cheap just so students don't have to move it.

I have my old first amp that is sitting in a box that I can sell to you for almost nothing. It sounds like it will accomplish what you are looking for.

Check your PM.
