fed up with bose need some thing new

my bose head unit is cutting out on me. only with cds, left side cuts out and i only get sound from the right. sounds like this is a comonn problme with the 5.5 gen. its driving me crazy.
so i am wondering what good head units are availible for around 400 bucks. i dont really want to get ripped off by crutchfeild. Don or any others if u want to throw any advise my way id apriciate it. im looking for something thats i-pod rdy.
future plas would be to upgrade all interior components and throw a 10 or 12 in the trunk. i dont need to blow the doors off with this system altho i do listen to rap as well as jam bands and rock. sound quality is as high on my list as my system BANGING is
im just concerned with the head unit for now due to tightness of the wallet. and posiblities / reviews / price would be greatly apriciated.
thanks
alex

I "think" the new Eclipse models are at least ipod ready...even so I'd check out something from Eclipse from The Don. there are head units in that budget for sure.

The HU is likely a Clarion. The Bose amplifier speakers are in the door. You can change to a HU that can drive line level and still keep the Bose.

Possibly is, most likely, but irrelevant. Hes looking for aftermarket.

No the amplifiers are not in the door.

Correct if it has a minimum of two sets.

For Bose systems, there are 4 Amps, 2 in the front doors, 2 in the rear shelf. After market HU can drive these Bose Amps also.

Not correct in this case. Believe me I do know a bit about these systems.

Never said an aftermarket HU couldnt do it.

Pretty much, if they dont know how to read and research first. I mean really how much MISinfo is on this site simply from a newb not knowing what hes talking about? Then people try it and have problems....

Just take it easy. Bose Amps are in the front doors with the speakers. They are powered by the Audio Amp Relay at M79. In the 1997 FSM page EL-126 to EL-129.

I used this relay to mute the sound for my Bluetooth Handsfree when a call comes in.

You are right, he is working on a 2003. All I'm saying is that the Bose Amps are outside of his HU. There is no need to tear everything out if his HU needs replacing.

There is no need to get so upset about it. And certainly the beat up the Newbie attitude is uncalled for.

First of all the info you provided was incorrect. If you would have read what year his car you would have known this and thus not posted incorrect info. How would it feel to this guy if he went outside and started taking off his door panels and such to find nothing? I imagine not very good.

Furthermore, your status is irrelevant, if youve been here for a day or a decade the treatment would be the same. No one was "beating" you up, just clarifying the info you provided was simply wrong.

Eclipse is the way to go, functionality, price, warranty, peace of mind. Pioneer IMO is a close second in that price range.

For some reason I don't think the 06's look as good as 05's.

True, I don't think there's that many big differences between the 05's and 06's, so I would still try to get an older one if I could find one. I love my 860mp, it's got all the features I want.
