I just put four Alpine SPR 6-3/4" in my Maxima to replace some old and tired Polk speakers. Something I noticed right away was that the magnet assembly on the Alpine speakers is about twice as large and heavy as the Polks. I always perfer a larger magnet when possible, but most manufactures don't show a picture of the back of the speaker or list magnet weights to give you an idea of how meaty a speaker is. I'm quite happy with the bass and overall sound of the SPR series and I think they're one of the best choices out there. I bought mine at Etronics and saved about $60 a pair over Crutchfield. Hope this helps.

magnet size does not correlate to speaker performance. many companies use neodymium magnets (very very strong magnets) on their motor assembly to cut down weight and reduce mounting depth.

Well i guess I'm showing my age. I didn't know there were alternatives to ferrite and ceramic. Do most companies now use neodymium or is it pretty much only high end components? Are there any price competative 5 x 7's that you would recommend for coryf?

I personally am really liking my Infinity's for their clearity in the mids and highs. For the price, I just couldn't find anything to beat them and do not regret getting them. I am not a big audiophile but I am picky on my sound so rest assured...Now I just need to save up and get a sub now that I've fixed the leak in my trunk O.o

it's cool, we're all here to learn from one another. most still use the ferrite and ceramic magnets, and there's only a handful that i know of that are using neodymium magnets (boston acoustics, ascendant audio, and morel hifi just to name a few). and yeah i would consider these higher end than the stuff you see at best buy etc.

not a big fan of 5x7s...but i'd try to get some sort of baffle made so some 6.5" can be mounted.

alpines

well the exlporers doors are only cut for 5x7/6x8. i would perfer a more compenent system which i have in my maxima. but none the less im putting four 5x7 in her car, then later the amps. far as i know the inifinities and polk are focused on the mids and highs. the apline had a good punch ... comparative to the rockford, but rockfords are way over prices. my budget is 500 or less. i found the alpine type Rs on ebay, two sets, for 175. so we shall see. i was gonna save the rest for amps.

thanks for all your input

polk mmc series or alpine type S series, also alpine has a decent 4 channel amp mrpf240, that combo sounds nice, will be putting it in my girls car, if you wanted to spend more, you could deffinately get better sound, but youll be happy with this...
