Alpine Type R 10" or 12" woofer? Thoughts on Alpine?
Hey guys my brother works for a company that gets good discounts on car audio. I did not go through him for my system because he can get in trouble for misusing his discount. However, he does plan on quitting and about the same time he quits I also have a birthday. He said he'd get me the box but I'd have to pay for the sub, but that he could use his discount. So that means I can get an Alpine TypeR 10" or 12" for less than half the MSRP. Roughly 90 dollars for the 10" and 97 dollars for the 12". I didn't really want something that big, the 8 is good enough for me in 95% of all my applications and adaquate in another 2 or so %. But on real low bass the sub 35hz it defiantely lacks so I figured for as cheap as I could get a 12" for it might be worth it. I'd be powering it at 2ohms with 400watts RMS.
What do you guys think? Is it worth it? Should I do it or not? The reviews on this sub are really good. BTW I've got some time to think about it but I value the boards opinion.

Is it possible to back the bass out enough that it doesn't rattle the **** out of my car with a 12? Thats my big concern I dont wanna be loud, my 8 sounds pretty clean and tight, however, on low tones it definately doesn't have it like a 10 or 12... tradeoffs I guess...damn decisions

I would go for the 12 also.. I have two 10" type-E basline subs in a 1.25 sealed box and they sound really good suprisingly so i can imagine the type-R 12 would satifsfy you...
Also, i highly recommend installing some damplifier from secondskinaudio.com.....I covered my trunk lid and rear deck today, and man what an improvement!! Subs hit cleaner than ever and a lot less rattle
BTW I got some ID V3. 10's coming soon... Gotta get rid of those comps..

i tried my friend's Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1D's in the same box...they both required the same volume I believe...
Infinity's sounded tighter.

Ask nilesh..he had a set of these before also. I think he'd agree with me on this one.

I can one from woofersetc or millionbuy if I wanted too I guess. That'd cost me about 35 more than my brother.

That one is about 35 or 40 more than I can get a 12" type R for.

i wanted a single 12....conserve trunk space.....but the way if i decide to add another, i can still run them @ 2 ohms and feed them 900W RMS to be within power spec for 2 12" subs...(each wired in series then paralled togehter to get 2ohms total..)

I started on alpines, there good but hanging around in here, i've learned there's lots of better options... ID's, diamonds, Arc audio etc.. But if it's the R's u want then go for it, just put it in a proper box...

I have a set of r's. Havent hooked them up yet but I will get to it this weekend. I have read reviews saying they are pretty good subs for the money. I got mine off ebay for cheap ^_^. I will have about 1500 watts on tap for thes subs

What determins a proper box? Seems like all of q logics stuff is 5/8ths MDF which is ok for an 8 but sucks for a 10 or 12. Do I build a box? How important are dimensions vs size? I was thinking just a square 13x13x13 exterior dimensions which would put interior at 11x11x11 if I used 1 inch MDF.

Just make sure you get the interior volume to be within the sub's recommended range. The shape of it not as important as the interior volume IMO. Also, I think 1" mdf is a little overkill, and can get heavy very fast. 3/4" should be fine in most situations.
