Terminal Oxidation
Terminal Oxidation
What the hell causes it? Before putting in my power cable, my battery terminals are fine. But now it's starting to oxidize around the ring terminal connecting to my 4 gauge. I can't see this from a chemical standpoint. Oxygen in the air is why metals oxidize, some faster than others depending on the metal. But how come it was fine until I installed the system?
Does the current draw have anything to do with it?

Just use some clear soda (7-up) and some baking soda. Middle School Science FTW!!
Seriously, after you get them clean..run down to the autoparts store and pickup some terminal protection spray. It's a small can for less than $5 and it's the red stuff that comes from the factory.

yeah, i neutralized the area with baking powder and water solution, and covered it up with some dielectric grease.
but the question remains...why did it oxidize after i installed the power cable?

Yeah water will work just fine, you can take it apart and just scrub it at that point to get rid of any excess. Its caused by the battery acid slowly evaporating/seeping from the battery , that combined with moisture. Most of the time it pulls toward the positive (+) side.
You can spray some of that anti corrosive sticky stuff on, or just get yourself an dry or gel typed battery that doesnt seep out acid. Mmmmk.

The auto parts store sell those little red and green rings pads to help stop corrosion. I put it the last time i changed my battery (over 1 year) and it is clean as can be after one year.
