Which way is your subwoofer firing?
#42
Well, it was a crappy lightning audio sub anyways. Now i Have 2 12"s in a huge box. There are only so many ways you can fit the box in your trunk, and I choose pushing it to the back of my trunk with the subs firing towards the lid latch. If only I could moved the torsion arms out of the way. That would give me more room in my trunk by allowing the box to sit against the ski hatch.

Anyway, mine are fired towards the trunk, but I'm going to play with firing them up to see how much (if any) difference it makes.

I Pointed mine up. I had about 1 inch of clearance from the bottom of the rear speakers to my subs. And with high excursion subs. Don't mix to well. Ended up taking my rear speakers out and have the subs fire upwards into the back deck. Kept the grills on so you can't even tell the speakers are gone. Loud as hell in the back seat.

play with it and see what sounds best to you. most subs sound best facing the trunk lid and a couple inches away(for those of us that don't use our trunks) If you have a huge amount of power(over 1,000 watts rms), dead center of the trunk facing the front sounds best and cuts down on rattling for those of us that don't sound deaden.

SO, your trunk is not 10ft from you, so you bounce it off the trunk lid and back, thats about 10ft

Mine are currently pointed to the rear. This is my slotted box I made quite a while back.

I used to own a Q-Logic Trapezoidal Ported box. It was when I had cheap Infinity Reference 12s powered by weak 720W Jensen amp., but the subs were angled directly at the curve of the trunk lid, and the ports fired straight back. Sounded pretty good for the cheap quality of the system

There *IS* some science involved here (in the words of Myth Busters, *WARNING* Science content ahead)... By pointing the subs backward you do to some extent get a more "mature" sound wave... If you picture a sine wave (sorry if you don't know what that is, but its something like --> ~ ) and the subs firing toward the rear, the sound wave as it "bounces" off the rear of the car and is reflected back toward the front kind of meshes with the sound wave that was sent forward on the firing - resulting in a double-sine or crossed sine wave. It has the effect of making the bass sound louder. The more functional answer, though - what stereo does not have the subs as a focal point aesthetically? You *want* people to see them - god knows they *hear* them.

And for an entirley origional response...
... mine is firing toward the rear. I had it in every other conceivable position in the trunk save firing down, and it sounds the best this way.

I am doing a toally new install on my '96 and I am going to fire a single 10 in a sealed box directly through the ski pass-thru, totally sealed from the trunk to minimize reflected sound. This is supposed to be a great way to set up your sub if it's done right. I'll let you know how it sounds when I get it finished.

As far as I know, low frequency sounds (below 60hz) are larger than the entire car. As such, it should not matter which direction the subwoofer is pointing or how far away you are since the wave covers a larger distance than the entire carlength.
