Bose System Upgrade w/Pics

I decided to upgrade the sound from the Bose system in my 03. I didn't want to replace the factory headunit because I like the factory look. My goal was to improve sound quality but keep the system looking stock.

I picked up an old set of 2 ohm Soundstream components on ebay and decided to give them a try. I also didn't want to loose any trunk space so I went with an 8 inch Pioneer Freeair sub.

The sound quality from the system is a huge improvement over the stock Bose. The Soundstream components sound great over the stock Bose speakers. The highs are bright and clear unlike the dull Bose speakers. Bass has also been improved greatly. The Pioneer sub is louder and plays a lot deeper than the Bose sub.

Raising a thread from the dead....

So if I wanted to improve the sound in my 6th gen...I could just replace the door speakers with a 2 ohm component set? Is the amp not somehow integrated to the Bose speaker?

I have a good car stereo background so feel free to get technical. I'm just not familiar with the layout of the OEM system.

If you guys like the stock look, get a Nakamichi deck. Stock look without the Bose crappy sound quality

Maybe if enough Bose owners contacted The Clearwater Company, they would make repacement speakers for more than just the Miata. If you aren't familiar with Clearwater, you may know them under their speaker buildhouse name of NCA Laboratories.
