It's definitely not a fiber optic cable.

Since I will probably be doing the install, can you extend the wire just like a normal LED? Just with the positive and negative wires?

It's either two or 3 wires, and I would definitely imagine that you can extend it.

its one wire with an led looking light (optical beam like a tv remote) at the end of it...in the directions it says it may need to be extended for positioning reasons. so im wondering who if any one has any experience doing this and where they mounted it...i was thinking the back of my rearview pointed down at the head unit. some pics would be nice for ideas

What head unit are you installing? Just curious...because...SWIX ftl and SWI-ECL/PS/ALP ftw imo.

Although...depending on how succesful your mounting location is, Id recommend the larger infrared eye from radio shack.

The PAC SWI-ECL is a module made by PAC that allows you to use your factory steering wheel controls in conjunction with an ECLIPSE Head unit.

They also have the SWI-PS - Pioneer
Or SWI-ALP - alpine

etc, etc....
