Call me crazy, lil hypothetical sub box

Now I know 4th g and 5th g trunks are somewhere in the vicinity of 13-16 cu ft. If one was to put a 15 on the rear deck that required such amounts of space or that needed a ported box of that magnitude, couldn't it theoretically be installed IB on the rear deck using the trunk as it's 13/14/15/16 cu ft enclosure?

I'm pretty sure this is possible, but have never really seen it done. The closest thing must be the three UR12's in that pic in the IB or box thread.

Lol nothing, but that would alleviate the issues some people run into when wanting to build an enclosure that big. I am more than pleased with the 8's, thanks again

Isn't that what IB technically is? Seal off the cabin from the trunk and use the trunk airspace as a "box"

Well ya, but my point is that a sub that is not made for nor recommended for IB use can be used that way. Ah forget it.

Sure you can do this. Ive seen many Db drag cars where there is basically a wall built dividing the front and rear of the car. The downside to this approach is weight. Your trunk is by no way shape or form a sealed enclosure, and also not made of very good sound concealing materials (metal). If you lined and sealed your trunk with something like fiberglass or foam of some sort this would work fine. Good idea though, eliminating the "box".

Exactly... kinda of like thinking outside the box, but only literally.

no 15" sub i know requires a sealed box of 15 cu ft because nobody would buy it.

I considered this myself. True, a sub may not "require" that much volume behind it, but it would certainly have its advantages. Greater volume in a sealed encloser lowers the Qtc of the setup and consequently the cutoff frequency, making the sub respond better to even lower frequencies. The only problem with using the trunk as the enclosure is sealing it. If there are any air leaks, it could act like a poorly designed vented encloser which not only has a steeper acoustic falloff rate below the cutoff frequency and an uneven response curve, but also may damage your sub. You should really get a book on designing speaker systems that has all the formulas so you can calculate the exact effect an encloser of that size would have on a given sub.

Oh, and if you do end up doing that, don't open your trunk while the sub is on! LOL That is, unless it was designed to work in free air...
