which HU? double din set up

Im clueless as to whats out there when it comes to stereo stuff. But i know what i want.
-cd player
-dvd player
-can't look ugly like most of those pioneer units. i hate green lights and buttons.

i will eventually add a screen which is why i want the dvd feature and it'd be nice to be able to hook up my computer or ps2 or something in the future if i want to.

any suggestions?

hmmm where will the screen be added? if you were planning on no screen in the dash i know alpine makes some pretty nice hu's that have dvd playback.. other than that jvc makes some like that but i would definately reccomend the alpines first. otherwise if you want the screen in dash then wait and get a double din touchscreen.that will look very nice in there.

budget? something simple? or do you want NAVI too?

-Alpine IVA-W200 (no navi included) ~$1000
-Djfrestyl's Eclipse AVN is for sale still i think, this includes navi. ~$1500 (iirc dont quote me)

both are double din, and nice units. both play dvds.

That reminds me, it has to work with bose stock speakers cause I'm not spending all my money on this dang project to buy new speakers.
My budget for the headunit is probably about 200 bucks. But I have a "hook up" at best buy so I'm looking at my options.
I don't care about navi. But ill look at the fs section I guess if that guy is selling something good.

you're not going to find anything decent that plays DVDs for $200, thats for damn sure.

on crutchfield they have only alpines and jvcs that are dvd readable without screens, but i would suggest getting a double din touchscreen instead. if you plan on mounting a touchscreen later in the dash..i dont even know how youd do that and it will be much cleaner if you just svae up and get a double din

ideally and practically i'd like a headunit that can read dvd's. but i was saying the only ones i've seen that play dvd's too along with with fm and cd player and all of that, have those tiny screens in them.
i will add a screen later

well go to crutchfield.com and go to 'car stereo and components' and then click 'in dash dvd players' ..then just search. most have screens but there are more than a few without, all made by jvc, blaupunkt, and alpine. i would suggest alpines, even though theyre more expensive. heres the link:

the thing is with these for a decent one you spend 500 anyway so i would just wait and go double din touchscreen, but whatever, its up to you

i cant help you here.. but just wondering..what are your reasons for adding a touchscreen to the hu? if it was mounted in the dash then you would already have the controls on the hu so in my mind the touchscreen would be pointelss here. so if its going in dash maybe you could get a non-touchscreen because those are cheaper and typically have much higher quality comparably.

yeah you've got a point...and to be honest, i cant remember the purpose of the touchscreen other than conveinance to be able to TOUCH it , you know? But if i get a touchscreen, its not like they have headunits without buttons do they?

umm.. if you get to this point i dont know why you wouldnt just get a double din touchscreen in dash. where do you plan to mount the screen later? the purpose of a hu is to control your stuff easily and conveniently-

this is the only dvd headunit i ever see but i dont like how it looks...
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-YRzXDrz...&display=L#Tab
the screen will be mounted right in the dash where my current block-of-a bose headunit is now.
I see what your saying about getting it all together but i figured it would be cheaper to get that touchscreen from redline or just the screen (which they were selling for 150) and then get a headunit for like 200 or less.

JVC has bugs galore and a horrible track record. I used to own the JVC Arsenal series DVD HU my self once, never again. why do you think its so cheap? spend a little bit more and get a pioneer DVH-series.

yeah the only thing is i dont know about screen compatibility and also if you install a hu then you will have one singl din worth of space for your screen which will not work so youd have to get creative on the mounting..and as far as i have learned from my installs creative usually means unclean

you would need cords and stuff to make the screens connect ot the hu regardless of what touchscreen you get if you do it separate, and total cost will end up very close to what a touchscreen would be on a discount site as well. just go the double din route. it will look 12093847129348712x better and will probably work better too. i realize the money issue is key here but in the end it is worth it and you will be happy that its all one unit. oh and make sure you buy with a warranty.then you also only have 1 unit to worry about in the long run- imo thats better than worring about separate things.

pioneer is a much better company than JVC for car audio at least..

I mean, i wouldnt recommend the JVC unit, but it will work. its not too too bad, it plays DVDs like it says it will, it just has a few strange bugs in it. I wouldnt buy it again, but im pretty picky. The thing used to shut off on me randomly, or the cd would get stuck inside... and a few other wierd things.

It's way better than anything pyle or pyramid or Jensen, however.

yeah i hear ya...i hate it when sh*t doesnt work right either though so it'd probably frusterate me despite my lack of passion for car audio.
im looking at the used stuff now btw..

Wow, just read this thread in its entirety. Let me clarify some things.

There is NO head unit (single din) that has compatibility for TOUCH screen. Pioneer's DVH series has compatibility for external screen, but that is a dead screen, it just receives signal. What would you be touching? The single din HU's do not output buttons, or have inputs for the signal the screen would send back. You are getting very confused in what you want. If you want a touchscreen, it will have to be all in one, whether it be double din, or single, OR, you will have to run a carputer.

With that being said, for under $1K, you cannot go wrong with my unit. It is compatible with Bose, has an auxiliary input, is touchscreen, and is NAVI.

Okay obviously I don't have enough money for your headunit, but I appreciate the info.
Forget touchscreen in that case. I thought itd be cool for future carputer projects but realistically I don't see myself ever getting into that.
Basically, I'd just like the dvd headunit at this point. Ill get a screen later. I see screens and dvd players for sale on the org but its just a dvd player not a stereo headunit.

Then look into Pioneer DVH-P5000MP

Still runs you about $400

edit: or their most up to date model. I personally had that unit and had no problems. Hooked it up to a $150 Microvision screen (the one everyone on the org has) and it worked well.

I have a 2 din jvc unit. It's been working fine for 4 months now. I got it for 600 shipped. It can play mpg files and it can play music off of SD cards. The angle feature comes in handy since 4th gen dash goes almost straight down. I wish it came with more visualization options while playing music, a hard drive, and a better remote. The joy stick is a pain to get used to and there's no touchscreen.

BUT WHY.....thats a complete waste of money.....he might as well wait and get a double DIN sized screen.....he could just get a really inexpensive HU and have the bypass run, if he wants to keep the stock tweeters, speakers,
