Bad Bose - now what?

Got a 97 SE with the Bose and want to replace it (CD player is busted).

Yes – sorry – it’s one of those posts again.
Don’t be flaming - I spent a long time searching the site and looking at the FAQs
and I’m still confused…

Some say the only way to go is to replace the speakers too at the same time.
While others say get the harness dohickey and it’ll be OK.

(BTW, Best Buy wouldn’t even touch the install – too complicated they said.)

If I had the bucks I’d do the speakers too, but I’m on a super tight budget.
Looking to just replace the headunit with something cheap -
probably a (One DIN) Sony (with Ipod input in front) for around $120.

So – my questions:

1] Really, any problem with going the cheaper harness route?
(other than crappy sound)

2] Where would you get the harness and antenna adapter?
(in terms of both quality and price)

3] What about a source for the box to fill in the leftover space below?

4] The Install DR site is good – but I can only find info for cars withOUT the Bose.
NE1 know of similar for Maxima with Bose?

5] Any recommendations for a cheap headunit with an iPod input in the front?

6] Any recommendations for a place that would do the install – chain or 25 miles of Danbury, CT?

Any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations much appreciated.

Many thanks y’all.

The problem you'll have is a lack of volume with the sony unit. The output voltage is low on that. To use a metra 707551 and have it work well you need something with high volt outputs something like 4 volts is good higher than that is ideal. You could always use some slice and diced rca connectors instead.

Nismos14 - Didn't realize that was a factor. Thought it was Watts that mattered. I'm no electronics whizz though. So I should be looking for a headunit w/ over 4 volts output then? Any reccomendations?
Any info on the org or elsewhere about the RCA splice?
Is that instead of the harness thing?
And then the voltage out wouldn't matter?

slickrick - love your rapping man. When's the next cd coming out?
Thanks but NJ 2 far.
NE1 closer to D'bury CT?

Ha. I were jest joshing.
The real Slick Rick is prolly hanging out on the Bently.org
- or mebbe he blew it all and he hangs at Vespa.org

And yeah, I'm an old fart. Don't feel it. Hope I don't act it.
Wonder who the oldest org member is?

Cars and music are 2 big passions 4 me.
Still have some vinyl but never play it.
Still buy CDs as opposed to MP3s.
I want the actual "thing" with the insert and all.
Well, I said I was an old fart.

Sorry - all off topic now.
Slap me.

Back on topic - what about all my questions from the first post?
Any answers?

Thanks

The recommendation for using the 7551 or fabricating you own would be my best advie. Provided all your ducks are in a row with the HU of choice..

Well, you know, as I wrote that I was thinking
"funny - or insulting?"
Please, just a joke.

So you got all I need?
What should I get on my own?
What about the box?
What about prices?
Would a detour when you're up thisaway be possible?
You can email me if you want to discuss off the thread.

Thanks

Actually., Don has not blessed my thread with his presence so I will jump on here.

Fast97maxse, we're pretty close, I'm right accross the border in NY and even usually cross over to play racquetball at the NYSC right out of Exit 2 on i84... If Don is down, I have a nice semi heated garaged, or if you have a garage we can do a meet at your place or mine. If Don is in the area that is, 2 quick sales/install can't be bad. I'll even throw in some beer/wine whatever...

Let me know...

Maybe not... post#23 showed up after I posted. It was a thought regardless.

Pearl96Max –

ok I'll check yer 4sale thread.
Box:
Bose HU is tall [I think it's called a 2-din? What's din anyway?]
So when I put in the Eclipse there will be open space below.
I want to fill that with a little "cubby" - for storage and aesthetics.
What’s the box called?

rmd0311-

I have an unheated garage - but it's used to store a wholebunchacrap.
We gots no basement no attic...

I know Don said no, but maybe for two
[or more - anyone else interested?]
he'd be up for it?

Alternatively, maybe we could meet at your place and do both installs
helping each other out or at least one of us could be working and cursing
and the other could be laughing...
I have a bunch of stuff: strippers [the tool not the entertainment], crimpers, soldering iron, bullet and other connector types, wires etc.

Ahhh ok, the dash kit.

You had me at strippers, til you clarified.

As for both of you, what I can do to simplify is 'prep' the HU/dash kit/harness to make it virtually plug and play. Diassembling the dash is quite an easy task and would make the install a breeze. Aside from that you know the I as well as many others are here to help.

This and all the other necessary cables (except the amp thingy) is included for free when you buy from Crutchfield...

Pearl96Max -
Thanks for help/input.
I checked the FS posts but couldn't find prices for what I wanted in your thread... Please pardon if it's my dense-ity.
Do you have a website?

WTB
Eclipse CD3100
Eclipse iPod adaptor
Metra harness
Dash Kit
(and would I need anything else?)

If you have any suggestions for alternatives to the CD3100 and iPod adaptor I'd appreciate it. I'd rather go with the Eclipse CD1000 (cheap bastard that I am) but it's not compatible with the iPod adaptor.

Also

I started a thread about this (see bellow) but so far no answers,
so I thought I'd run it by you...

Out digital clock - In V1 remote?

A ways back I did the clock rewire. Soon after the clock stopped working.
I took dash apart again. Nothing to do with my rewire. It's a loose wire in the plastic connector block and nothing I did fixed it.

So I thought as long as I had the dash apart to put the Eclipse in I might take out the old digital clock and replace it with the remote display for my V1 dectector. Looks like it would fit pretty well.

Any thoughts on this?
Did you - or do you know of anyone attempting similar?

Thanks

That would be because the Im not currently selling the 3100, hasnt been released yet. Total you would need..dash kit, harness, antenna adaptor Along with the HU and iPod adaptor.

The items I listed are random ones that are currently here in stock. Peripherals and such I never list 'for sale' as there a pretty general item and could take literally pages if I listed them all.

Its been done on 5th gens clock location, but Im unsure of the 4th genners. I personally have not done one yet though.

Sorry Don.
Soon as I posted that last one I saw you'd already replied.

So, when will you have the CD3100 in?
Or do you have the CD3000 still?
I presume there's not much different between them.

Or is there something cheaper (but still good)
and working with an iPod adaptor that you'd recommend?

What would the package cost me?
S&H?

What does mean?
I'm happy?
I'm fat and happy?
I'm running around in cricles?
I really have to pee bad?

Didn't mean to point business away from you or anything. Was just letting him know about how simple it was and easily attainable.
