Replacing system in 07 Max

I'm getting my 07 Maxima soon and I'm already planning on upgrading the sounds. I have a couple questions though.

1. The head unit looks like it's built into the dash and has many more functions than just a radio. I've checked a couple online stores and can't find any info. Can the head unit be replaced?

2. If the head unit can't be replaced, would replacing just the speakers make it sound better? Can an aftermarket amp be added?

What have you guys done to upgrade the systems in your 6th gens?

Havent done a 6.5 gen yet, but there are dash kits for the 6.0 gen to put an aftermarket radio in. Either way, yes, you can add aftermarket amps and speakers to any head unit including the stock one, and each piece will contribute to your better sound. If it is at all possible to put an aftermarket radio in, Id highly recommend it. It will greatly increase your sound quality, usually even of the factory speakers. You could try giving Metra a call (the largest aftermarket dash kit/harness company) and see if they have info yet. metraonline.com. Thats probably your best bet, because they might be able to tell you if there is a kit in the works.

i overhauled my entire audio in the 6th gen. i'm not sure on how the central dash layout looks like on the 07s, but here's a pic of my 06 with the metra kit that kpr10is mentioned.

Thanks guys. Never heard of metraonline.com before. I guess it can be done. Hey AscendantMax, you have to keep the stock head unit in there? I'm guessing you do since it's part of the dash. Nice setup BTW.

nope, the stock head unit is removed when you're using the metra kit. the ac controls were lower on the stock layout. the metra kit relocates the ac controls higher, and the aftermarket radio goes below it.

So then why are there radio buttons above your AC controls? I thought that was the head unit.

i take it back, the ac controls are the same location lol . i got it confused with my cousin's 07 camry and his metra kit. anyhow, you can see where the cd and tape went when it was stock. the HU was behind the plastic trim. once removed, it left a big space for the metra kit's cd pocket thingy and room for an aftermarket deck.
