This is the first post and first thread I've made in the audio/electronics forum. It's kind of scary lol. Anyways I usually hang out in the 5th Gen / SE Regional topics, but I'm glad to be moving onto more things!

Really excited since I just placed an order for a Fi Q 15 which should be coming in soon.

I'll be replacing my stock BOSE setup fairly soon and hopefully in time for the Import Alliance 2007 meet (July 07).

What I plan on doing is...

-Viper x791 Alarm System
-Ground Wire Kit Install
-Custom Sub Box
-Sound Deadening
-Fi Q 15
-Pioneer Premier p880prs HU
-Rainbow 6.5 Component Spkrs/Tweeters
-Elemental Designs nine.1 amp (pwr sub)
-PowerBass 600w amp (spkr pwr)

I'm making this as my worklog / questions thread for the up coming months. Really new to the whole audio scene so hopefully you guys will be nice enough to answer questions that I may have!

Tim never sleeps

For the rears you don't really need anything too expensive. Its not like your ever going to sit back there. For me I was thinking about buying 3way coaxial alpines or just something cheap but very reliable since I'll never sit in the back anyways. Thats just my .02

I work nights, so I'm here from 10pm-8am 4 nights a week

I'd just do some decent coaxials for the rear as well. I have JL Components up front and just some JL coax's in the rears.

Thats why he the midnight admin lol

If you have the money then I guess buy come nice coaxials. If your budget is low then I'd say get some decent coaxials that isn't too pricey but still good enough.

How about a 5 channel amp instead something from DLS, or just a better pair of amps overall... matching amps would be even nicer for install purposes.

880prs is nice, I love mine, but be sure to ground the rca outs prior to install to be pro-active in avoiding the internal ground loop issue.

if you're looking for a set of 6.5" components I have a set of DLS UP6's for sale. Match them up with a DLS amp and you will have one smoooth sounding system!
/shamelessplug.

But seriously you dont' really need the rear speakres that much unless you have passengers all the time...and then I would just power them with the headunit at the very most.

I've heard from LeX that rear speakers aren't needed so I guess that's 2 of ya lol. But I might get some anyways since I don't want to leave the people in the back musicless haha.

For the front and the rear speakers I can use 6.5 right?

What is the difference of coaxial speakers/component speakers?? Meaning front and rear ??

Told you I had newbie questions!

Hmm...I do want those Rainbow Germaniums from Don but that'll take me a while to get.

I'm thinking of installing the sub/amp to the stock head unit for now until I get everything together.

So it'll be the sub/amp > HU > Front Speakers > Rear Speakers

That would be like 3 seperate installs...Or do you guys recommend doing everything at one time?

Also why is it that I've seen a second battery located in the trunk? Does a sound system put THAT much stress on the battery that you will need a second one?

Thanks

Front and rear speakers can fit 6.5"

Coaxial are speakers that have a built in tweeter (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) while componenets have a seperate tweeter (correct me if I'm wrong on this too).

Ah okay at least it's the same all around.

Ooh okay so Rainbows are component since their speakers / tweeters are seprate.

By the way is anyone able to get their tweeters in the stock holes? I'd love the stock look, also don't really want to cut holes on the door panels.

I just noticed that question could be taken in the wrong way....

From my 4th Gen experience. Its better to get the HU or amp in with the sub at the same time. My 4th Gens elec went like **** without a capacitor. The sound system drains a lot, look into a cap.

bad advice. a cap will make it worse on his electrical system.

threadstarter, id highly reccommend you scoop up those DLS components that burnurass is selling.. they're at a great price, great quality and not many people have them.

let me put it this way...if you do the headunit first, you'd have to either get an adapter to do some splicing (its in the FAQs) to get the aftermarket unit to work with the stock speakers (since you have BOSE) OR change all the speakers and rewire it to the headunit.
If you're rewiring the speakers anyways...you might as well run them to the trunk (or wherever you're putting your amp) and do it all at once.

Subwoofer/amp you can do at anytime...worst case scenario you tap the signals off the bose headunit (if you keep that).
AND make me an offer on those UP6's....I feel like cutting deals today. heh

I would get those DLPs off ya, but after the $279 for the Fi Q I'm kinda broke lol. Still gotta pay for my alarm install. Gotta protect my new investment!

Either way burnurass let me know how much you want for em. I've got a local friend willing to sell some DLS MS6 components and wondered if you had a good price.

I've heard a lot about not using capacitors. But will everything still be okay?

Basically I'm trying to get this piece by piece each month and install around June.

Wish me luck!

PS: Fi Q delivery date (3/07) Counting down....!

EDITED: To add...How do the DLS UP6 and Rainbow SLC compare to eachother? Or are they about equal (they're around the same price) so just wondered what is the best for the $. If I waited a little longer I would get the Germaniums no doubt

I've heard nismos14's SLC's and obviously heard mine....SLC's have more midbass but the DLS overall setup SINGS...ti's incredibly smooth. Midbass is pretty good..especially if you dampen the doors. If you want more clarity get the DLS's. The SLC tweets aren't as nice for sure.

I should be getting a set of Rainbow SLC's soon...got a nice price from someone here. Wondered what amp to use to power them.

The max rating on the speakers is 150W

So if I get a 2 channel amp can it be 400W? What would you guys recommend?

I was looking into an elemental designs nine.2x

I want to get it close to 150W, but nothing over that.

Thanks!

Thank ya

So the Rainbow SLCs off a 2 channel amp.

Is that 2ohm or 4ohm?

Do I run the 150W max or go lower to avoid breaking stuff?

Haha

RMS = 300x2 (@4ohm)

That would be too much...

I guess what I'll be looking for in an amplifier is...

RMS = ~150Wx2(@4ohm)

Is this correct?

If so I can go with the nine.2
http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/pro...products_id=45
RMS = ~100Wx2 @ 4ohm

if you look hard enough you can find a Memphis belle for a bit more than the price of the two ED amps. Its a four channel plus a sub channel...

Update: 03-21-07: More gathering to be done!

Just as a reminder this is the car that I'll be installing all the audio equipment into. I luvz me some bass fo realz hehe ballin'!!!! jk

Oh man I'm suprised I've almost got everything. The only few things left to get are A LOT of sound deadening probrably from Second Skin Audio, 1/0 Awg wiring kit, and the Pioneer P880prs headunit. The alarm + custom box will be done by the installer so I will still need around $600~ for that.

I've already ordered a set of speaker spacers and the 2 channel Pioneer amp to run the frontstage...Those should be coming in this week.

For now here are pics that I took today of things that I've recently recieved.

Okay I've got a set of component RCA cables. These will have to do since they're shielded and all that fun stuff. Cost was $40 for 2 of em.

The dash kit from American International...and metra wiring harness. Both of which were $43 together.

just dont do a cap. i posted a thread about caps a few months ago. it puts more stress on the electrical system than it give back. the "theory" is that it will level out the electrical system. when infact the cap draws more electricity than it releases. with a little research you can find this info out. its a funky little equation but about half of the electricity that it reserves is lost due to heat, so its drawing twice as much as it releases. plus it drains in about 3/4ths a second. so you only get about 1 second of power. then it takes 5-10 seconds to recharge... never heard a 1 second bass hit befor.

4 awg will suffice, 1/0 is a little overkill and will cost you more..

looks like you've got some install work cut out for you!

ya your defintly going to get your hads dirty, to do a real good clean install expect to spend about 2 days doing it. took me a day to install the door speakers head unit, and wireing. another day to make the box and get it in the trunk. then the last day i just put the amp in and sat back with a beer... how soon are you going to start your install? also you may want to consider building a false floor in your trunk. the maximas have a very uneven trunk. i made myn out of ply wood. would sujest mdf and make sure you make a door or a hole so you can get the tire out.

Okay I'll use 4 gauge for the big 3

I had a feeling it would take more than a day to install everything, but I've got someone local max4speed who does audio installs so hopefully it'll be done on a weekend same guy is doing the custom sealed sub enclosure. I'm going for low profile with this. Don't want a really extravegant set up going on

I've compared the P780MP and P880PRS (Pioneer Premier HU's)

I really like how the P780MP looks, because it would blend in more with the dash since the face is black. The P880PRS has more features, but stands out too much in my opinion.

I won't be running active, so I thought maybe I could deal with the 780mp...What is your opinon guys? Almost everyones got the p880 so I know it's good, just wanted to know if anyone here had the 780 and their opinions. Would they have traded it to get a 880prs? I'd still like your opinions even if you don't have either HU.

Here's my photoshopped pics for reference and how each HU would look.

With P880prs ($320 Shipped)

With 780mp ($270 Shipped)

Thanks for all the input guys. A few things will be coming in this week so stay tuned for pics!

i went with a silver pioneer for the fetures, it really is an eye soar. go with the black you'll be happier in my opinion. really all the features myn has are more then ill ever use, and the 780 has more than myn does. plus its black.
