Anyone have the Alpine CDA-9857?

Any good? I was looking on Alpine's site and it seems like a good iPod HU since it has a direct wire connection and you don't need the box for it to work.
I plan to replace my BOSE hu.

I had the Alpine 9851 in my old car and I love it. I ran my Ipod using a cord I bought from Crutchfield for 15 bucks. It connected from the headphone jack of my Ipod to the back of my deck. The sound quality was still great.

I've got the 9856 with ipod cable... Works great! Check out the reviews on Crutchfield's site; They're pretty much dead-on about the menu's being counter-intuitive. But once you get used to them, it's alright. Is the 9857 the HU with the Biolite display?

ehh. why wouldn't you get one of the 07 decks if you're going to bother go for a deck with no tunability, and ipod control? ALL the currently sold 07 decks can do ipod control and percentage search - and they all have HP filters - but thats it, its pathetic. the 9885 is the replacement for the 9857 and its 50 bucks cheaper. And looks better, if you ask me.

I'd wait till the 9887 comes out this summer, thats going to be a great deck with full ipod control. Basically a 9835 replacement (really great 04 or 05 deck) with better DACs.

agreed. that and the 9835 (my deck ). Except if you had these and wanted to add an Ipod you'd have to buy a $100 adapter box. and it wouldn't be full speed or quick search

The Kenwood I just bought has a USB port right on it so you can plug your ipod in. Model KDC-X491

the kenwood won't charge the ipod, and you probably can't control it from the deck, either.

Looks like I'm going to order the 9885 from Crutchfield and the Sosche adapter and the Ipod cable. The install should be plug n play right?

did you get a kit for your car as well?

its kind of plug and play, you'll have to connect the wires color for color. Then it'll be plug n play.

Jay, It's pretty plug and play. I soldered all of my connections and heat shrinked them on my 9835. The Illumination wire snagged me up the first time though. There are two and one is the variable output through the switch. Can't remember if it's the orange with black or straight orange.

I'll probalby use the kit that they give me. I'd like the GXE kit, but it's too expensive.

Oh you got an Alpine Chuck? Pics?

i was wondering what the difference was between the 9857 and 9885, if its true that 9885 replaces the 9857, why is the 9857 still more expensive?

hey 00MaxSE what dash kit are you going to use?

the 9885 has HP filters, the 57 does not. other than that, the colors are different with the buttons (red instead of green) and thats about it...

yeah i know it makes no sense. they just dropped the price as the 85 is the 57's replacement... it just hasn't sold out totally yet.

I'll try to find a used GXE kit because I don't want to pay $100+ for a new one, but if I can't find one, I'll just use the one that comes with the hu.

got the 9857, been happy with it but seriously ticked off that Alpine copped out on the time correction and hp lp Xovers. Still a good unit but Pioneer is putting out some serious units lately have a look at them, for the same price as the alpine you can get a lot more. Wish I would've looked closer at the Pioneer before getting the Alpine.

i think thats the same as the one i just got, except mines last years model. Im cheap last years models always like $50 cheaper.

CDA-9856 is the one i just installed. Someones saying only 07s have full ipod control? Mine has good control, sure it could be better somehow, but its easy enough, can browse by artist, song, album, mix all etc. Basically everything I can do with my ipod alone, just with some getting used too.

If I were you, id hide your ipod better!
I ran mine under the shifter console, im cutting a hole in the center consoles compartment, so its completely out of sight. Right now its pulled up thru the e-brake lever, cause bugs were annoying me and i had enough installing for one day.
But you have an 00' i dont know how the center console is. 92' its gonna be simple to run it back there and completely hide it.

I usually take my iPod with me. I don't leave it there on the shifter.
