Thoughts on external EQs

I know this had to have come up before but searching equalizer returned only two threads. :\

Anyway, how many control freaks out there use external equalizers? These catch my eye:

Audio Control FOUR.1i
Eclipse EQ1000
Kicker KQ9

If I installed one of these would you just keep the HU at stock EQ settings, or is it necessary to tweak the signal before it hits the ext EQ?

Also, if you have any recommendations for other EQ options those are welcome as well.

Instead of buying an external you could always get a HU that has an internal. I've had great success with the 880prs (minus noise issues) and my current unit, running active, gives me 11 bands of parametric eq, more than enough vs. an external eq.

In fact looking at those you listed, my CD7100 has 11 bands and only the kicker comes close with 9. With the CD7100 you also get adjustability, you can change the signal of the high frequency you are adjusting from 10 or more different options IE, if you're tweeter is crossed at 2500 you can make one eq band 2500, then 3000, etc etc. Same with the midbass, and the sub channel has one band, but its more than enough when you factor in all the adjustability as you can adjust the width of the band that is being adjusted and that can be done on all 11 bands as well.

Suck it up and get a CD7100,

ya i had both intrenal and external. get a nice audiophile head unit, call it a day. problem i had with external was i was always screwing with the head unit and the external. atleast with it all in one, cleaner install and usally lots of presets and what not. i like the 2 he listed. honestly buy the cd7100. ive heard nothing but good things about it. going to be my next headunit.

Having all this processing in a HU is a very nice thing.

Well that's good to hear, one less component I have to buy. I did, however, already buy a 5100 from Don.

A question about your 7100: you said you have an 11-band EQ but on Crutchfield it's saying 7-band parametric. Same difference?

If you use the HU in the 3-way mode you get 11 bands. If you use it in the 4sp+sub mode (front and rear speakers, plus a sub), you get 7 bands.

What Juan said, and realistically the 7 band should be sufficient, but to get the most out of the unit running it Active is the way to go, cd5100 does not have that capability though the older cd5000 did.

Audio Control FTW. All of the noise issues is installer error. Tuning is one of the most important parts to any system. If you do not have a good ear, or access to an RTA, don't worry about buying an EQ.

Try working with an RF 360.1 or a Alto Mobile piece, I bet you'll think otherwise about "installer error".

Some units will produce hiss when going from analog to digital back to analog....that has nothing to do with installation error.

I have a 30 band eq with great success. I believe if you have the equalization you will be able to fine tune your system to whatever sounds best! It is actually for sale because I am thinking about buying a Rockford 360 y2 which has a 30 band eq built in !

My Phoenix gold EQ is for sale 30band eq,

Ya man... Maybe I should have stuck with the 860mp, and ran it active. Oh well can't say I'm not happy with the CD7100... it's just defects and issues that come up.... but I've pretty much gotten boned with every HU I've had lol.

Agreed.... the f1 is pretty snazzy though. I just can't see having a unit thats worth 1/5th of my cars value (1/4 now after depreciation ) in it!
