The player uses the ISO file system (8.3) that's on the disc. It can not read the Joliet file system (64 characters). I'm not sure if it can read ISO31 filenames or not. Nero can burn ISO31 filename (mac filenames). So far no one has made a player than can read Joliet filenames yet. That's a shame. The trick around this problem is to put ID3 v 1 tags into your mp3s. If there is a ID3 Version 1 tag in the file the player will show the artist and song from the ID3 tag rather than the 8.3 filename.

The JVC is by far the best MP3 Headunit out there, but I don't think it's good enough. It has several problem:

No ID3 v2 support.
No Joliet filename support
No Audible fast forward and rewind on mp3s
Improper handling of VBR files

I'm going to be keeping my Bose headunit until someone makes a MP3 headunit that at the very least properly handles VBR files. A very large number of my MP3's are VBR. I have hundreds of CD's of mp3s. I will not reburn them to make them compatible with a headunit. I should be able to play any of the CDs I already burnt without having copy the files to the HD and make them compliant with the players limited feature set.

I just checked. The JVC does support ISO level II. That's the 31 character filenames that macintosh pc's use. If you set you're burning software to ISO level II, or ISO-31 (whatever they call it) you'll get longer filenames. However like I said before the best bet is to put ID3 tags in the files. Too bad ID3 v1.0 tags are so limited.

Add ID3 tags to your mp3's before you burn them to a CD. There are programs the are designed for Tag management such as Dr. Tag. You can also use Winamp. While a mp3 is playing in Winamp make sure Winamp is your active application and press Alt + 3 (you don't press the + key. You press and hold Alt then press 3 while still holding down Alt. Then let go of both). If you put the song information in the ID3 tag you will see it instead of the JamesB~1 or similar when you play back the files.

Some of your files already have ID3 tags and that is why they don't show up as JamesB~1 or something similar.

JVC player

ok.. i used a philips cdrw and found problems. when i play a song sometimes it will skip but it's not the file because when i rewind the track it wont skip again on the same spot. so i guess its the disc itself and the player is misreading it somehow. im gonna try to find some other high quality cdrw's and see if the problem still exists. i haven't experienced this yet with a cdr.

It is available in black, but not in the US.

Go with the JVC head unit, because it is both good looking and a quailty buy. Thats just my opinion.

YellowBrother, Gunner, and all...what's the latest on the SH99? I'm about to order myself one for Christmas. Have you guys found out anything else new and exciting?

What about pictures of the deck in your car, anyone have any?

I've heard so many good things about the SH-99 from here as well as other sound boards. It would have been a no brainer for me to buy but the brushed aluminum silver just won't go with my interior. Damn, damn, damn I really wish it was available in black.

I like the remote. seems to have more range than my old clarion. i wasn't able to use a philips cdrw(for some reason it skips... i know its not the file because i rewind and it never skips on the same spot), but i have found ZERO problems with using Memorex Music cdrws(ones made for home cd recorders).
you thought it was hard deciding on 18 songs for a new music disc... wait til you try to find 180 songs for a new disc
id buy it again. its a good player

RE: MP3 Headunit

Hey All,

http://www.highwaymp3.com/hwmp3.htm

One of the better comprehensive sites out ther when comparing MP3
units.

BTW as stated, that you could not play VBR files on your head unit,
I traded MP3 albums for years and a large majority of the MP3's are 100% VBR. I currently have a Kenwood 8017 and although you may not like the looks of it, I've never had the problem of it not playing a file.

Hey have you tried to use a cd-rw yet? I installed the HU yesterday and tried a cd-rw with 120 tracks. Some of the songs have 2 second skips while others don't. There is an issue with skipping but I don't think anybody has found the reason.

Try as cdrw that was made to use with Home audio cd recorders. I did and they dont skip like a regular data cdrw.
