Weird problem after portable GPS hardwire?
In my I35/5.5gen, I already had my V1 hardwired via the rear view mirror wiring. Decided to hardwire my portable GPS as well, so went and bought a new lighter socket, tapped + to +, and - to - on the same wiring as the V1 (which powers the compass in the rear view mirror) and plugged my GPS lighter power plug in it.
Now, my V1 doesn't work, the GPS doesn't work, but the mirror does? If I blew a fuse, then the mirror should not be working either right? Help please?

Did you tap into the same ground as the mirror too? Id try running a separate power and ground power the nav unit. The wiring for the mirror is enough to support the mirror and the V1 since the V1 really doent require much current to operate. Your nav unit probably needs more than those two combined. If you disconnect the power from the nav unit does the V1 come back on?

Try changing out the fuse anyways. Sometimes they can partially blow and is only allowing enough juice through for the mirror. I ran a separate wire for my detector when i hardwired it. I dont have the option of running off the mirror wire in my 4th gen like you do in yours but I did used to run it off the power for the maplight/sunroof controls. If you change the fuse and it works you may just need to run a separate wire like I did to prevent this from happening again. I'm sure you already double checked any connections you made. What did you mean you bought a new lighter socket? An actual socket or new lighter adapter for the GPS?

I fixed the problem . It was a grounding issue. I took the ground wire for the GPS off the factory one I tapped, and grounded it to a 10mm bolt up in the area. Then took out the in-line fuse for the V1 to reset the circuit, now everything works
The Garmin and TomTom GPS units I have, both use the lighter socket to power. So I went to the parts store, bought a complete new lighter socket, the socket and the push thingy. The actual socket had spade connections for power and ground, so female spade connectors+wiring = functional lighter socket. Which then I used to power the GPS.
