Opinions on Viper alarms?

I don't recall the model number, but I was shopping today for alarms with remote start, and one of the local shops sells a viper with dual stage shock sensor, keyless, and remote start with (the salesman claimed) a half-mile range. Installed, the system would cost $399, $50 extra if I opt for remote trunk release, and another $100 if I want a window roll-down module.

First of all, can anyone tell me if a half mile is an accurate estimate on the range? The alarm/remote start on my previous car only had a range of about a block, even in ideal conditions.

Secondly, how's the reliability on these things? Has anyone had problems?

And finally, is there a comparable system I can get for less than this, or a better system I can get for about the same cost?

Thanks in advance.

No it will not work a half mile away. Realibility is second to none. I say go with it. Get all the extra's its not a bad price. It's not gonna work from half mile away but so what? It's got good distance.

I've always used DEI security systems. They're tops. Range is not important because you don't need to arm and disarm the car from a half mile away. That needs to be done while you're right next to the car.

Range is important in this case for the remote start, not to arm/disarm.

I've never understood the purpose of remote start, either. The car doesn't need to be running if you're not in it.

Remote start is useful for warming or cooling the car when it's cold or hot outside. It's also good for your engine to idle for a minute before you take off, to let the oil get sloshed around a bit and let your car get into the right kind of mood for "driving excitement".

Plus, it's just cool. What good is a device if it doesn't have a remote control?

Personally I say for it too. Viper is well known for quality and reliability!

And I have a viper 800 ESP for sale if anyone is interested! Brand new in box for $200 shipped! email me.

Disappointment.

I bought the alarm (viper esp 550). DEI claims 2500 ft. operating range (about 6 blocks). This thing will work from about half a block away, if there are no obstructions. DEI lies.

Does anyone know how I can permanently disable the factory security system?

The box does not say 2500 ft. I think you are reading it wrong...."up to" 500 ft range...the key words are "up to"

someone should jump at this deal, i also got the 800esp for the same price..

another option would be clifford. i really like how they have built in relays, instead of having to add all these ugly relays..
