What I would do is manually reset the router by getting a pin something small to press the reset button on the back of the router. Then set up the router with a lower security (wep) to check if it can connect. If that works, raise the security to wpa.

I had issues with my laptop not being able to connect to wpa but can connect to wep with ease. The reason why I would suggest resetting the router is it saved me after trying to solve a very similar problem. After playing arould for a hour or so, I gave up and manually resetted it and set everything back up in under 10 mins and was done.

you do know that a router password and a network key are different, right? hopefully, your father-in-law has that info saved in a file or printed out somewhere. if not, try connecting to the router and seeing if the key is listed. my linksys has this listed under: wireless -> wireless security -> passphrase

ive always hated netgear routers.. i used to have one.. and i couldnt even play xbox live on it.. so i upgraded to a linksys WRT54G FTW i heard d-link was pretty good too.. im running my linksys with custom firmware too... the only thing problem i have with my router right now, is that when it restarts by itself (i set it to restart every sunday) that it doesnt get on the internet, but thats only because im running custom firmware, other than that, its flawless, sends high quality video to my ps3 downstairs in the living room effortlessly through Wireless G...

You should set a security on your router cause other people can steal your bandwidth if you don't

I's right here.

Except I'm a bit further from home than you. But you got it working, sweet.

Also, Netgear sucks.
