Interesting problem

The subs hit just fine, but i noticed when i pop the trunk with the music still going and stay in the car, even with the trunk just popped and not all the way open, it sounds like the subs are hitting much harder

any idea what this means? or how i can get them to sound like that all the time?

i had thought maybe i need a bigger box.. or maybe i need to put port holes in the box? it is sealed

really what im asking is why they sound different with the trunk open.. obviously because there is more air pressure on the box with the trunk open.. but that shouldnt effect a sealed box right?

well the bass isn't restricted when you're literally facing the subs with the trunk open.

port the subs (properly that is...you can't just drill holes into the box) and it will be much louder.

yeh if your subs cant move the air they are suppost to move you are losing your bass. they have to be able to "move air". if they are restricted. your sound is restricted. so what kind of set-up do you have. subs/box. bigger isnt always better.

uhh trying to remember off hand real quick, dont have time to check right now

2 kenwood 12" 1200w
800w pioneer amp wired in parallel

custom built box with subs facing out, toward the back seats, the volume is smaller than recommended i know that, but not by too much.. i didnt have enough material to make the box any bigger, it's sealed

i can get more specifics later, on the way out the door right now

eh, just keep in mind ported boxes will be a bit bigger than a sealed box. so if you're willing to give up more trunk space and gain output, a ported box will be ideal for you.

but, if you don't want to give up the room, try to make the sealed box a bit larger to be more efficient. your lower octaves will be more noticebale as well.

You just solved this yourself. Face your subs towards the rear of the car. Problem solved.

By facing the subs forward without sealing off the trunk, you are creating a large amount of cancellation due to the waves bouncing around in the trunk. Facing the subs to the rear of the car "should" resolve the issue.

i just flipped the box around and there is definitely a noticeable positive difference in sound, thanks guys

they still hit harder with the trunk popped, but i figure thats because the box is smaller than recommended.

Remove any rear deck speakrs you have and let some of that bass in the cabin, should help a wee bit.
