I'm planning on getting a doube din in dash navi/dvd HU this summer either Pioneer Avic D3 or Dual XDVDN8290 and I was curious do most units let you listen to music while the navigation is directing you? Thanks

 

I can't speak for most units, but I think they do. I own an Eclipse AVN and it does. I don't know about the Pioneer or Dual. What I would do when I had questions about a product that no one I knew had I would email the company and ask the question. That always worked. Or you could go to crutchfield, and get online with an advisor. Hopefully this helps.

#1. Do not get the Dual. That is one of the only brands I would place under Jensen in terms of A/V In-Dash quality. I would rather have some other POS.

On that note, the AVIC-D3, has a memory function. You can put your Navi DVD in, set your route, memorize it (it can memorize long routes, sometimes up to 500 miles+). You can then put in a music CD to listen to, radio, XM or Sirius, or Ipod. I went with the AVIC-D2 for this negative side. The D2 has two drives, one dedicated for the Navi DVD. The other does not play movies, but a small DVD player or PS2 solves that. You may want to wait, the D3's are dropping in price, such as around $699 in some local stores. But, I wouldn't be surprised if the D4 came out soon. It may be worth waiting for. Also, check out the new AVIC-N4 and AVIC-Z3 (Pure SEX) models.

 

The Avic-z3 is the way to go. I myself have the Avic-z3 and had it for about 2 years now, it is the best investment I ever did. It has all the things you want. You can Nav while listening to any type of music, CD/DVD/Radio/Sat. Only reason why you are able to listen to music while naving is because the NAV maps are stored on the Harddrive and not running off DVD. I strongly recommand do not purchase any doudle-indash system that in order to NAV through the city you need to insert a DVD MAP.

1) DVD can get scratch.
2) Can not listen to CD music while naving because your CD/DVD slot is being used by the GPS system inless it comes with two cd/dvd slot.

I purchased a avic-z1 which contains 2006 MAPS about 2 years ago, which I then just converted it into a avic-z3 by just swapping out the harddrive and loaded a pre-load z3 harddrive which contains March 2008 MAPS. They are the latest MAPS that are avaiable. There was no point for me to purchase a complelty new avic-z3 since the only difference between a z1 and z2/z3 are the harddrives and the firmware.

BTW.
I now sell pre-loaded z3 harddrives, that will replace your z1/z2 to a z3 within minutes.

And I don't know if the OP's budget allows him to invest in a Z series AVIC. The Dual and the D3 he posted are around $600-$1000. But I do love the clean look and features of the Z.

 

if you get an Eclipse avn 6610, you can navi and listen to music as well. It has two slots to insert the map dvd and another cd, dvd or whatever you want.

But do you really want the NAV maps on a DVD. What happens when you lose it or it gets marked etc. I dont know I just dont like the idea having the maps on dvd to being with, that why I didnt go for a slot in-dash.

I leave my Map DVD in there, it's not like I take it out all the time. I RARELY do need 2 dvd movies at the same time. I use the cd/DVD drive, not the map drive so the map disk stays in there all the time.

 

I never take it out. The 6620 has dual drives. 1 drive is the dedicated Map Drive and the 2nd drive is a CD/DVD like ^ said. Don't take it out, then you can't lose it.

 

I really don't like the idea of having the maps on a DVD as well but like stated you shouldn't have to take it out. With the AVIC Z3 can you upload all your Ipod songs to the HDD? If you can then Im definitely going with the Z3

 

Although I am a huge fan of hard drive navigation when it comes to double din head units, some of your information is incorrect. I have a dvd navi and I can play music while using navi. My head unit and all Eclipse after have multiple cd/dvd slots. Not only can you listen to music, you can change radio stations and also change sources (radio to mp3 and/or cd) and still maintain the use of navigation. The navigation lady will also continue to talk. This is pretty much a standard nowadays with navi.

Going from nothing to something, I think you'll be happy with most navi ability on these type of head units. The concern should be more on audio output (voltage, etc), build quality (dont get jenson lol), and the extra features you may be interested in (built in bluetooth? ipod user interface? additional monitor outputs? screen size? etc?)

Not to say you'll have this ability because its considered illegal but some head units may not let you use navi unless car is at a complete stop. Not difficult to overcome with a little patience but can be a little bothersome if you are constantly on the go and looking to change directions while on the middle of the highway. This is dependent on installer and unit but not a bad idea to research that as well.

 

How easy is it to swap out the hdd for the new maps? Im looking into getting the z2 from Crutchfield they are offering a great deal now and was wondering about upgrading it to Z3 maps. Would this void your warranty?
