installation problem

So today i wired up my avic z1. I connected all the wires together and then went to turn it on. nothing? So two hrs of figureing out wut i was doing wrong was because the avic has to be screwed into the metal bracets because thats where the ground is. very interesting.... then this is what i do and i'm stupid because i know better and did it anyway.... when trying to figure out the whole ground situation i have my car turned on. now i'm messing with the grounds to both harnesses to the system and the ground seems to be doing nothing.... so i get confused.... ground them all to the metal brackets that the avic and the info screen are in.... plug everything back together and start my car.... the a/c doesn't work.... the speedometer fuel, rpms, all don't work... and just the a/c lights don't work... so i'm confused again.... checked every fuse (3 fuse boxes) and they're all fine.... could i have fried the brain (white box below info screen) ????? i have an extra brain that i got off ebay so i'm going to try it tomorrow... just not sure why i'm having the problem i'm having....also with my speakers....they seem to be working just not as loud...could this be because the ground wire?
