Rear View Mirror Rattle

I have already asked this question in the sound deadening sticky, but nobody seems to pay attention to that (or at least to me). Anyways...

I seemed to have eliminated a lot of the interior rattles I have in my car - mainly from using Damplifier on the rear deck. Now that I can't hear rattles coming from that area anymore, it seems that the main rattles I hear are coming from the rear view mirror. The rattles seem to be getting worse and worse, and dissapear 99% when I squeeze the top and bottom of the mirror together. Anyone have a good idea to get this thing to stop rattling? I really don't want to do anything to it that is going to look tacky or stand out a lot. This is driving me nuts...please help.

I found a write-up for a STI at:
http://www.iwsti.com/forums/how-inst...or-rattle.html

and one for a 350z at:
http://my350z.com/forum/audio-video-...r-rattles.html

I am guessing the 350z one might be semi-close to ours. If nobody has made a write-up for a Maxima, I just might have to do one...

After replacing the base on my mirror 8 times, I just gave up. I haven't had a rear view mirror in over a year. I took mine apart, before the base broke off, and used double sided tape around the perimeter of the frame (inside). The rattle was gone. And then it fell off.

Nice...I think I might try to take it off and take it apart and see if I can tighten it up in there somehow...

There is nothing to tighten. The board that controls your auto dim and temp/compass (if equipped) is the only thing that has a screw to tighten. The rattle actually comes from the trim ring that covers the face.

You will see what I mean when you take it apart. Plan on buying or obtaining some kind of tape or thin padding to secure the trim piece.

Yea I kind of already knew it was coming from the trim piece, but I was hoping I could open it up and maybe jam some Damplifier in there to "tighten it up".

rear view mirror

umm..for the longest time, my system would cause my mirror to fall down and become unfunctional. hence i never really used it...but then it started rattling, i couldnt think of anything to fix it, and i didnt REALLY wanna take it off...so i left it alone, and low and behold, one day after tweaking my system, the bass rattled it off of the windshield. it landed in my lap while i was making a right turn. i have no complaints for getting rid of my rattling rear view mirror ...thats my advice ha

I wish there was some kind of way to clamp it together, without looking ghetto.

Yeah man, i thought about a way to fix it for months...the way fate had it falling into my lap was the best solution imo...but it is safer to have a rear-view...ill keep thinking and or looking for possibilities and ill update you if anything comes across

One of the times it fell off I replaced the stock mirror shaft with a cheap plastic one. It failed to, but it hasn't broken. It just works its way off the window mount.

I can't believe I didn't update this. I have been through a total of 8 replacements. It now sits in the rear floor board. I don't think I have had it up for over a year now.

Open it up and go to town with some rubber cement?

As far as it falling off, is that from the mount disconnecting from the windshield or the mirror stalk coming off the mount?

I broke (sheared in half) several of the metal shafts on the stock units before I tried a plastic mounting shaft. (no homo) That seemed to last a while. Maybe a month, then it failed as well. The base that is screwed and secured to the window, not the metal support that is epoxied to the window, won't stay on with the window flex. It immediately falls off. I don't care though. I have gotten used to dealing with it not being on. The flex was pretty intense with the Q's. I am not even going to try to put it up with forward firing Havoc's.

no pics no care

we took apart a mirror in my buddy's altima and stuffed it with some thin foam padding. that seem to do the trick for him.

Oh yeahhad done that to the actual mirror housing already. It didn't rattle at all. It just kept falling after breaking.
