Need a How To: Radar Detector to Interupt Audio Idea

I want to have my radar detector interupt all audio from my HU when it's playing (DD pioneer 4000). I'm pretty lost as to how to wire this. Anyone done this or have ANY advice? 1998

that seems complicated. Also it would seem pretty annoying if your music keeps cutting out on you when you pick up a signal. I don't think there is a way, but i'm interested if someone did do this.

If you had a radar detector that was smart enough to differentiate between cops that are a few miles away and one that is imminently ahead, and you could figure out a way to only interrupt the audio when it's the imminent one, it would really be useful I would think.

True, but if you can't do that it's gonna be really annoying and complicated either way. I don't think its been done either.

Not sure if it'll work but could you splice into the speaker inside the radar as your signal wire. Then run that to the Mute line on the back of your headunit? That way when the radar makes a sound, the signal will go to the mute line and mute your music??

Sounds like that might work. We need an Audio Guru to get in here.

if you had an Escort 8500, there's an LED that blinks when it picks up a signal built into the cig plug. It seems plausible that you could tap off of this wire and run a line to the mute wire of your radio.. You just would need to make sure the polarity was what the HU wants to see, if not you could use a relay. Also you need to make sure no signal is getting fed backwards which could damage either unit (use a diode maybe?).

This all might not work if the LED gets a pulsed signal however, it would have to be a solid hot or ground for it to work I would guess.

I decided i'd go video hunting and i found one that kinda gives me a few hints of what could work....

This guy's HU is reading mute when his detector goes off... seems to work flawlessly. But i think he sells some kinda unit to do this.

One thing I just thought of is wouldn't you need some type of delay? Otherwise if the radar is beeping at you or if the led is flashing at you, wouldn't that just make the mute turn on and off just as fast as it is beeping/flashing?

Maybe a small electronic capacitor?
