I Just bought a deck with GPS which requires a GPS antenna. I also have XM. The XM antenna is on the top back part of the roof and has really good signal almost all the time. My GPS signal on the other hand is rather poor. I don't have enough slack to mount it outside the car and mounting it outside the car and having a black wire run across my roof is out of the question. Is it possible to feed the GPS Input on the desk AND the XM antenna input from just one antenna? I know GPS and XM don't operate on the same frequency, but will one or the other pick up each other's signals if asked to? I do have the VSS wire connected to the speedometer wire at the ECU, but would like to have the GPS working too.

 

No, but where is your GPS antenna mounted? Mine is inside the car and has NEVER failed, its mounted behind the clock at the base of the windshield, and the countless antennas I've installed inside the car have worked fine too. What brand of head unit is it also?

 

It is an Eclipse AVN6620. Right now it is velcroed on top of the third brake light in my rear window. I was going to velcro it behind the clock in the front windshield, but the manual said it had to be greater than 20 inches away from the NAV deck otherwise the readings would be incorrect. It also said it had to be mounted to something metal. How did you secure it to the dash behind the clock? Velcro? I was thinking of putting it on the metal in the dash right next to the deck?

 

So its okay to leave the XM antenna inside your car and you still can get good reception??? Because Im about to do my install and I really don't want the antenna on the roof.

 

Unless requested I dont think I have ever mounted an antenna outside of the car. Eclipse AVNs work great under the clock and in most cases can be mounted directly to the top of the HU itself. Im sure some others will chime in and confirm this since I have done Alot of them this way locally.

 

IIRC the clock is just clipped into place and comes up by prying it at either side?

 

Funny, I have the exact same deck cpuguy. Yes, the clock unclips upward, and yes I used velcro to mount mine. I've never done one under the clock the way Don does, but it should work fine there also.

 

Anybody else have there XM antenna mounted in this same spot?

 

Im sure they will come, but if not I have done at least a dozen from in here like that. Of course if my word isnt good enough, then you can wait and hope they reply.

 

Recommended Manufacturers Mounting Location:
Mount GPS antenna to metal bracket and place at least 20 inches away from the Eclipse Deck with clear view of southern sky.

Don's Recommendaton:
Mount GPS antenna in the dash just under the defrost vents.

Works way better in this location than it does by following manufacturers recommendations. I removed the clock and mounted it just under the dash right behind the clock.

Dammit I already did the install yesterday in 10 degree weather before reading this. I put the damn thing on the roof in front of the sunroof and ran the wire thru the weather stripping and behind the door hinge behind the kick panel LOL all for nothing Should have activated and tested first damn directions..

 

I had a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee that the "Professionals" installed my XM antenna in that same fashion...Everytime it rained my passenger side carpet would flood because water followed the XM antenna wire down and into the carpet.

 

LoL, I have seen my fair share of that !
