Speaker recomindations?

I currently have rainbow component 265s up front and memphis coaxials in the rear with a pioneer premier headunit. I recently got an ipaul rainbow amp put in and now the speakers can't handle much bass before they distort. I don't have the bass turned up at all so i'm guessing I just need to get better speakers? My budget would be $500 for the speakers. Thanks in advanced

Yeah I misspelled recommendations lol..

germanium 265s?

they can handle quite a bit of power, i think at one point i was sending my set ~200w per ch and they took it like a champ. how is your tuning?

Well I got them from don like a year ago. Rainbow 265 components and I know everyone on here always raves about them so i'm kind of surprised at how they can't seem to handle the power of a 90x4 amp.. Maybe it's the install then? I have had some issues with the install already so it could be. There's still a high pitch noise when I accelerate that seems to come from the rear speakers. And every now and then I get a loud noise like just static from one of the rear speakers.

they can definately handle more than 90w. the high pitched whine noise is usually from a bad ground. check the grounding location(s) and make sure it's free of paint. if there is, sand it down to bare metal and reground.

i'm pretty sure there's something off with the tuning/install.

Well as annoying as it is to think that they screwed up the install since it was $220 I suppose it's better than having to buy new speakers. Although I still want to replace the memphis coaxials since they aren't nearly as good as the rainbows are. Anyone know a good place near Mount Laurel nj? I know Don's in Edison but that's kind of a hike.

Don might be a hike, but I can promise you he will treat you and your car right! Not to mention badass customer service and product selection.

Badass customer service include taking a trip to mount laurel for gas money + labor?

Google maps says edison is 1 hour 13 mins from mount laurel. I would probably just go ahead and order some rainbow coaxial speakers to replace the memphis. I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere rainbow 165 and 165 kicks? The number may be wrong since was a while ago but do you know how they are? Also is it normal for the lights to dim a little as the bass hits?

if you want some bass get a sub or two. im running 2 12" pushing 2000W, sounds amazing. as far as your lights dimming, get a capistor, you can pick one up cheap online and itll fix your dimming problem right away... also lets your amps pull more power faster, which is always good

Eh don't really want to add any subs since I like the trunk space to much. I believe I saw don say he used a cap as a paper weight in a thread a long way back but I could be thinking of something else

Edit: Tried listening to shinedown and can't go past 25 on the volume before it starts to distort when the somewhat heavy stuff starts. Shinedown is a rock band if you don't know so not used to them causing distortion issues lol.

Also I did used to have a Bose system in my car so could that have anything to do with the issues i'm having now if it wasn't done properly?

Edit #2: Have another question that I keep forgetting to bring up to the audio place when I go . I got a sirius adapter installed to my premier unit and pretty much since the day I got it it will randomly cause my headunit to shut off while i'm listening to sirius for no reason. It isn't because of reception issues or anything since it says the message "awaiting for w/e" displays until it gets the signal back so I have no idea why it does it and it's pretty annoying. Yes i'm asking a lot of questions but i'm just that lucky that I get all the issues lol.

caps are a waste of money. they're more of a drain on your electical system than a help. it's only a bandaid to a real problem. upgrading the car's 3 main grounds will help a ton with the dimming issues and more of a real fix to that problem.

not entirely sure how the rainbow numbering works. maybe don can chime in when he sees this thread.

and the light dimming issue may indicate a poor ground.

Yeah my friend was actually in my car with me tonight and he said the high pitch noise sounds like it was grounded to the alternator improperly and the static that randomly started he thought was a crossover messing up? I forget if I mentioned the static issue so i'll explain that one. Every now and then from the rear driver side speaker a pretty loud noise that just sounds like static starts and even if the volumes on 0 it will continue.. As you can probably tell i'm pretty much clueless about car audio so I have no idea whats going on and just hope it doesn't cost a lot of money to fix lol.

Sounds like a bad rca. Maybe bad at the radio. Maybe bad amp.

I've seen not so good radios that can't filter the noise well.

Also make sure your rca's are no where near power. If they have to be close try to cross the two at 90 degrees.

The radio is a pioneer premier 680. For the rest of it I don't really do anything related to car audio so just going to try and get someone to fix it for me (hopefully don) or tell me what I need to buy after they look at it

i have an alpine V12 amp that does 160w RMS x2 powering my rainbows..

still stock rear bose..

i start to distort the rainbows around 58 volume on my pioneer... and that's probably because i have the gain set a little to high..

I use the BBE Enhancement and my EQ from 200hz and up are set to 0..

Crossovers are set to 80hz 12db slope on the Alpine and my JL500/1 is set to 80hz

Is your high pass filter on? If not it needs to be turned on and set to 63 or 80 hz

, x a million

I have a feeling the speakers aren't crossed at all, HPF is off on the amp. Ive been throwing 150w a piece at my rainbows for years and they don't distort if I don't want them to.

It has to be a tuning issue, or install

Lower the high pass waaay down like mentioned above.

Check phasing - fade to right, then the left does each side sound fine and then centered is where it sounds bad ?

How are the drivers mounted ? Standard OEM baffles ? MDF ? Sealed up well ?
