I have the same unit in my Max. Yes, it does play CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and regular ones.

Does it fit in my '01 max without any special kits or anything like that? I have a stock Bose in there. Can I use my exisiting speakers too? Will this HU sound better then stock?

I had a different stock setup on my GXE (tape unit+4 speakers). I run stock speakers. You should be better off running your stock speakers. I had my install done at a shop, dunnow what kits you may need. All I remember is a $7 antenna adapter.
