I already have a Sony DSX-S200X head unit installed with bose speakers and I'm looking to upgrade. I'm pretty sure the 4th gen takes 6.5" speakers. Anyone have any speakers they could recommend? I was looking at alpine speakers, but I don't want to spend a few grand. Could anyone recommend some alpine speakers that aren't too expensive? And any other equipment that I might need. I'm pretty sure I need 4- 6.5" speakers, 2 tweeters, and 2 subs (the ones behind the rear seat)

you can buy alpine type-s 6.5" components for the front and 6.5" type-s coaxials for the rear deck. those are cheap and sound pretty good for entry-mid level door speakers. the tweeters should fit the space of the factory tweeters in the front with little to no modification to the door panel.

you should run your own speaker wire from each speaker to the aftermarket deck's wire colors. (the white gray green and purple wires (incl the ones w a stripe). a min of 16 ga wire will get you bumpin.

Is there a significant difference between the type-r and type-s? I'd be willing to shell out an extra $200 or so for them if there was. Also, do you know what these speakers are?-

They're behind the rear seat, and when I open the trunk I can see the bottom of the speakers, there's 2.

 

those are the maximas bose 6.5" rear speakers. you can replace them with a set of those 6.5" alpines. the difference between the type-s and say the more higher end from them the type-r is mainly the different materials in the surround and the cone. they are made with different materials that make the sound more rich compared to the type-s's. they can also handle more power if you want to amplify them with an aftermarket amp.

 

I just put 4 base Planet Audio 6.5s in my 4th gen and I'm very pleased. They can be had for $50 shipped from Newegg with a nice warranty. They handle bass farely well but I think I'm going to put 1 10 or 2 8s in to help out. Ill put it this way, with my pioneer hu tuned properly they sound extremely close to the g35 bose.

 

Do you think the bass is enough with the six, 6.5"s (are these component or coaxial?) or should I get 2 subwoofers and put them where these are? The ones on alpines website are several hundred for each, any other brands I could put in for subs or if alpine has any that are cheaper that I don't know about?

 

For a high quality setup, just 4 quality 2 or 3way 6.5s is fine. Everything doesn't have to be done at once. Component speakers (6.5's) are the basis of any system. Read reviews and stick to a budget. If you get a set that you are happy with the sound but want more highs or lows, then *** subs or tweeters acordingly.

I recomend Planet audio components baecause of the price to qualitly ratio. My $50 for 4 beats my friends $200 for 2 pioneers.

On a side note. Most people get tired of subs after a while. No one ever regrets a good set of components.

Just don't forget to bypass the bose amps if you use the stock wiring.

i agree on a lot of your post, but disagree with some also. i've had my subs since 2006 and im not tired of them.

like stated above, a good pair of door speakers will get you going. your best bet is to go to a store, either a mom and pop shop, or a best buy, 6th ave electronics, etc, to hear what speakers can sound like in person, so you know how they sound before you install them. most places do have alpine type-s and type-r speakers as you were interested in on display for demonstration reasons. then you can either get em in store, or search online and get em cheaper.

if your sticking w alpine, the type-r's are way better than the type-s, or type-e subs. they can handle 600 watts rms, and sound phenominal. they can be however, a lil costly.

you will need a box, an amp, power wire kit, rca's ( some power wire kits include rca's, some dont) if you want to add any sub of any kind to your car.
