Replace 5th gen 2k2 Bose Hu with Mp3 Hu

have been reading aroud here about those who have replaced the BOSE HU in their 5th gen 2001's with other head units. The details are murky as to how successful this was.

Some claim success, but don't go into much detail as what steps where used to intergrate the MP3/CD unit such as a Kenwood MP3 8017. Also, what about losing some of the trip computer functions as a result of "yanking" the Bose Hu out?

Can someone go into detal as to what is required. Here is what I want to do in phases do to cash outlay...

Phase 1:
Have professional installer remove the 6cd changer from my 2k2 and replace it with Kentwood mp3 8017 unit and use existing 7speaker Bose speaker system. What do I need for this to happen

Phase 2:
Dump Bose speakers and am. HaveProfessional install of new speakers and Amp for uses with my 2k2 Max. What do I need for this to happen.

thanks

Incase anyone wants to know:

1.To replace the existing bose Head unit with a new head unit such as the JVC KD-SH99 and use the existing bose speakers the following is necessary:

A. from autotoys.com a nisah4n "peripheral Aftermarket headunit" for around $59.00. This converter kit uses the speaker output from the new headunit and allows it to use the existing wiring and bose speakers

B. from autotoys.com a Nissian antenna adapter for around $8.00

The NISAH4N "peripheral aftermarket headunit" is for 1995-2000 Nissian's, so I guess it works with the 2k1 and 2k2 units. Didn't see a different unit. perhpas autotoys can adivse at time of purchase.

Disclaimer: I have not purchased and installed these yet.

if anyone knows otherwise, please post!

I just did this on my 98 Maxima. Replaced my Bose HU with a Clarion 815.

jdmatl has got it covered, but let me suggest some additions;

a) You"ll need a phyiscal adaptor to replace your double DIN head unit with a single DIN. You can get replace with another double DIN unit, but you'll find that most of the feature packed receivers are single DIN. You can get an adaptor from www.metraonline.com

b) Most of the boses adapters take the speaker output from your new headunit and convert it back to a line-out for the Bose. If you get the PD-4 from www.linkmeup.com, it will take the line out RCA from your new HU and feed it to the BOSE system (amps/speaker). This is much cleaner, because amplification only takes place once. The catch is that the PD-4 is pricier, like $180 with the approrpiate harness.

Also, with this upgrade, you will most likely lose the steering wheel audio controls, too.

I checked on metraonline.com and did not find any DIN kits for the 2001 or 2002 max's. Thanks for the tip on the PD-4.

I downloaded the manual and such. I don't see how it provides output to the speakers using the radio's internal amp. I don't see anything but "line out" RCA jacks. These are great for Line In/Line out stuff, but I want to used the powered speakers in my 2k2 for a while till I get more $$$ to upgrade the speakers. Don't I need some watts out to drive the internal speakers on the 2k2 Max Bose system

It looks like to me that the PD-4 can be only used for Pre-Amp output, not to power the speakers with the radio power.

The unit I refered to will allow one to use the internal aftermarket headunits amp to drive the speakers.

Am I missing something with the PD-4 that will allow me to use my
Jvc sh99 Mp3 radio with the existing speaker system on the 2k2 max?

thanks

The PD-4 is not an amplifier. It's only purpose is to convert a BOSE signal to a regular stereo signal. In the Bose system, the amplifiers are not in the HU, they are right next to the speaker, or, as in the 2K2 Maxima's, they are electronically 'next' to the speakers. What I mean is, The Bose HU sends a low level BOSE signal to the BOSE amps, which then feeds the BOSE speakers. The PD-4 sits between the HU and the BOSE amps.

In a regular stereo, The HU and amp are all in one, they then feed the powered signal to the speakers.

If you want to use the JVC SH-99 to power your existing BOSE speakers, the the PD-4 is exactly what you need!

Keep in mind, you will lose your steering wheel controls. My car doesn;t have any, so no loss there

By the way,

this is the metra kit (Single DIN) I got for my car, it says it works with the 2000 Max as well, so I guess the 2001 and 2002 will be OK, too, but don't quote me! Yeah, its hard to find on the site. You go straight to product showcase when you hit the metra homepage. This is what you would need for JVC SH-99 since it is also a single DIN unit.
