Kenwood KDC 248u "Protect" Mode

Hi, I installed:

The Kenwood KDC 248U & Kicker DS6.2 Component Speaker Set

Here are the links below if that helps:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KDC2...U.html?tp=5684

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_206DS62...-2.html?tp=106

So after I installed them everything plays, but when I turn up the volume to around 30, the Receiver just starts flashing "Protect" on it, it only does it when I try to play music loudly though.

And no I don't have an amp (yet) for the speakers to run off until I get my rear speakers.

But I just wanted to make sure that it isn't something I messed up with the wiring, is it only going into Protect Mode because I'm trying to play it too loudly so the receiver doesn't burn out?

I'm just asking for confirmation from someone who knows better than me.

30/35 is pretty loud...i think you're just pushing the head unit a little hard and it's letting you know that you're about to clip. are all the connections from the car to the radio good?

get the external amp and it'll play much louder and cleaner.

Haha, I've always had pretty bad hearing... and I'm pretty sure they are, I taped off all the old wires and the newly spliced ones in pretty well to make sure they weren't any loose strands or anything.

And I mounted and taped the ground to the metal chasis of the radio mount assuming that was good enough. But I think your right as well, I'll just wait to play it louder until I get an amp. Thanks for the help.

Did you ONLY use e-tape? or did you use butt connectors/solder as well?

For the wires in the back of the receivers and new speaker wires into the old ones I just piggy-tailed it because I had no soder. Could that be a problem?

these kenwoods have a sensitive protect circuit. Every time this happened to a customer of mine it was a blown speaker, somewhere in the car.... too much current/bass throwing the speaker up/down too much, coil bottoms out, shorting the internal amp out and for protection, it kills it temporarily...

HPF on that deck? Id also suggest adding an amp, its obvious you want it louder

Sorry about the late reply, if you don't mind explaining what does HPF stand for?

And I just remember that I have the blown out rear speakers from the old Bose setup (I haven't had funds to replace them) should I remove them? I'm wondering if that could be causing problems with it, oops!

High Pass Filter. cuts out bass from the signal to the speakers at whatever freq you set it to do so.. pretty sure this deck does not (I actually own the same one, somewhere, lol)

disconnect the rears and see if it continues.
